FYI...Handi Peep and Firesights
« on: June 01, 2005, 04:12:13 PM »
More than one person has asked for peep sights on Handis in the H&R Survey and Firesights have also been mentioned. H&R already offers the Williams FP sights as an accessary and the Williams WGRS peep sight comes standard on the Buffalo Classic and Target rifles. Both sights plus the other Williams peep sight are available from Williams or any Williams retailer like Midway and are available from H&R, also. The Williams shotgun shorty ramp will accept any of their Firesights and will fit most H&R barrel contours and comes with the same 6-48 screw as late production H&R front sights have......These are all bolt ons, no smithing required for most people.

UPDATE: H&R has switched the front sight mounting screw size to what appears to be a 3-48 or 3-56, which can be used with the Shorty Ramp, but isn't ideal . :'( 4-48 may be found on pre '87 barrels

The Williams WGRS peep sight is available direct from H&R for $20.00 w/$5.10 shipping, part number R03019, be sure to order the two screws for another $6.

Williams has instructions on how to determine sight height on page 18 of their catalog which can be downloaded at Williams. Brownell's also has a sight height calculator.

Thanks Quick.  I ordered everthing for the max today.  Not sure that everthing will work the same as your 45, but Hey, just one way to find out.  I will let you guys know how this works on the max.

Always liked peep sights and like them even better with firesights.
I must be crazy.

For Canadians, like me, it is virtually impossible to get any of these sights from the States (except through a long wait through my dealer).  The Optic Zone held a scope for me for a month so I could get the import permits and everything sorted out, as US export law isn't letting any of these things out without a prohibitive amount of effort.  (Cabelas won't even ship me a recoil pad because it falls under a "gun part" category) .

Anyways, to the main point, rather than rambling on more , for any Canadian Handi or BC owners, the only suppliers I found for the Williams FP sight are www.sirmailorder.ca (which don't have the ones for the Handi, and Western Gun Parts ( www.westerngunparts.com ) who are shipping me the sight

Here's another suggestion from FirstFreedom...

Quote
FYI: If you happen to be hardheaded like me and do things the hard way, then you'll want to know this - I put a Williams peep rear on my Handi (no smithing required), and then ordered a Marble brand "Uni-Ramp" fiber optic front (like an idiot; before I found this sticky; this required a gunsmith drill & tap to place a front sight hole farther back than the stock sight hole). Anyhow, the point is, of the two height choices (.405 and .470), get the taller one! Get the .470, not the .405 one. The .405 one would result in a point of impact way too high, even with the rear dropped to its lowest setting (this is with a .45-70 cowboy 405 gr load trajectory; it would be even worse - higher hit - with a necked cartridge). Ideally, it would be even taller than the tall one. Also, FYI, of the 3 barrel contours, the largest (.875) worked with a .45-70 barrel.

BTW, anyone want one of the short ones free? Just mail me $4 for shipping. It might work with a different very low rear sight.
