38/55 Target

Hi Everyone

I getting ready to get my hands on an H&R 38/55.   I wouldl ike to change the sights to a mid range vernier type of sight purely for aesthetics.  Can anyone suggest a sight that is readily adaptable for this application.  My apologies if this has been covered in a previous topic...I could not find anything with the search function.

Well I found what I wanted today X 2.  I just bought a Buffalo and a Target....for about 1/2 price!!!  Both guns only test fired!!

This mid-range 3" Creedmoor Vernier tang sight includes two pivoting adjustment screws in the base, to allow perfectly true Vertical alignment, without file fitting the base to your tang.

This sight does have windage adjustment, built in. You may loosen the eye disk, and slide the eye-disk carriage vane from side-to-side, for windage. Be sure to scribe a zero mark, since the vane is unmarked.

Two 4-7mm mounting screws are included. Base mounting holes are 1.510" on center. Made in Italy, this sight is often fitted to Pedersoli Rolling Block Rifles, or Sharps rifles by Pedretti, EMF, IAB, Siles, or Powder River. It will not fit the 1874 Sharps by Shiloh, C. Sharps, or Pedersoli. Those use the same sight spacing and odd screws as the original antique Sharps rifles.

Yes thanks I just ordered it.  Now I need dies, bullets, load information...can't wait.  I started with cast .377 with gas checks for the 38/55, have not bought anything for the 45/70.

Wheres a good place for lee dies?  I see they make both the sets i need.  Cabelas don't carry the 38/55 from what I can see.

You would do well to start with bigger cast bullets, they are notorious for being overbore, most shoot .380"-.381" well if you can chamber them, they also have small chamber necks which compounds the issue.

Thanks for the heads up, maybe I'll change to the .378 or .379, any posts with load info on here?

Lots of posts, but the search function is disabled, using the members list then searching by name is the only way to find posts IF the poster's name is known. Here's JPH45's and Cheatermk3's posts, scroll thru em until you find applicable posts, that's the best I can do for ya, they are well versed in the idiosyncrasies of loading for the 38-55.

 Once I saw an Handi Rifle,fitted with a set of muzzleloader double triggers,but I do not know how that fella went about fitting them to the gun.
 It was stocked in curly maple,a nice piece I thought!

juano2001,

I have had better luck with cast bullets sized to .381.  My Handi Target rifle is a 2007 version so the chamber is the correct size.  Depending on what you have, you might need to get the chamber reamed out to the correct size.
