357 Max with super heavy bullet
« on: October 16, 2006, 05:11:45 AM »
Its raining and I got to thinking,I would like to load some 278 grain lead bullets in my H@R 357 Max.
I have all components ,  just need a safe load which would give me about 1000 fps from the rifle.
Thought about filling case with 777 to base and seeing what would result.
Would my barrel stablize this heavy of bullet.
Also have some 238 grainers both bullet weights that I have are unsized at 360.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Hillbilly Jim

i think both will tumble. That has been my experience in heavy for caliber 35 bullets in a 357 mag handi. 200 is the heaviest I have had to stabilize

Paul5388 shoots 250gr cast bullets in his, IIRC. I had mine rechambered to .35Rem, it shoots the 240gr Mt Baldy FPGC moa or better. It may not shoot spitzer bullets of heavier weight tho, but the only way to know it try. Everyone said the 1:16" 35 Whelen would only shoot round nose bullets well for 250gr and above, but that's been proven to be incorrect. I would bet if it's going to work in the .357Max, it will shoot best with the hotter loads. Those that did the .44mag to .445Supermag rechamber get excellent accuracy with bullets that don't shoot well in the .44mag. which has a twist rate of 1:38!! The 1:15½ or 1:18¾" twist of the .357 may work fine with the right load and bullet diameter.

Tim's right!  I shoot 250 gr cast Beartooth's for my hunting load.  I use .360 DW brass or .357 Mag brass and get the same kind of groups at 100 yards.  Here's a 100 yard group with the 250 gr @ 1200+ fps.

BTW, it's a standard .357 Mag barrel.

Here's what they look like loaded.  The little one on the far right is a .44 Mag, next to the 250 in a .357 Mag.  The rest are .360 DWs.
