Chaote Forend Makes Action Sloppy
« on: January 24, 2007, 04:05:19 PM »
I just got finished installing the Choate Monte Carlo stock and standard forened on my .30-30 Handi.  Everything locks up OK, but with the action open there's a lot of slop and side-to-side play that has never been there with the wooden foreend.

Have been reading the FAQs and other posts, haven't seen this addressed.

 Ideas?

 Thanks,

 Rick

You've discovered the disadvantage of the synthetic forends.

Contact Choate, maybe they can help. It's easy to change the hole size to reduce pressure on the barrel, but if it's loose, it would take an offset shim of some sort....or a new forend. ;)

Thanks Tim,

Just sent an email to them, maybe they'll be quicker with a reply than Speer's been so far...  I'll give them till Friday then just ship this back for a refund and forget about synthetics if they can't help me with it.

I thought they were supposed to lock up tight, with no apparent side-to-side slop, with NO forend installed. If the forend is the only thing keeping the barrel from wobbling, then maybe the barrel isn't properly fitted?

Oh, action open. I've never noticed any slop with the action open, with the factory wood or lams, or with the Choate Store-Arm forend. Maybe you got a bad forend?

I have a Topper ,30-30 and it had a large amount of side to side play when opened.I simply put a shim under the forend spacer, slop gone .The rifle shoots better than I do   Doug

My BC had a wee bit of slop and I put a shim cut from a plastic milk jug under the fore end spacer and it cured it.

If your gun locks up tight then there is nothing wrong with the barrel or action, and everything will work fine.
The barrel being loose when the action is open is just a down fall of the plastic forend.
There are at least 5 thicknesses of forend spacers for the wooden forends.
If a handi rifle has a wooden forend you can install a different thickness of spacer to compansate for the play when the action is open or install the correct thickness of shim between the spacer and the forend as others have done.
The play in the barrel when the action is open will not hurt a thing, the important thing to remember is the barreled action must be tight when locked up, the gun should be tight when locked up without a forend on the gun.

Thanks Roostertails,

But I'm not comfortable with it being so loose, and wear on the underlug concerns me.  If I put -2- washers under the barrel lug it does tighten up a bit, but is still loose.

 This today from Choate:

Send the forend back to us with a letter about what is wrong and your phone
number, we will send you a forend that is longer.

 That's what I'll do.

 Thanks for the comments,

That thread you quote doesn't say anything about synthetics forends. My Choate Varmint setup doesn't give me any issues. There is an awful lot of generalizing about "all" somethings lately.

You've discovered the disadvantage of the synthetic forends.

That's my point, the syn forends don't have a removable spacer, so increasing forend pressure isn't very easy and why Rick is returning the forend to Choate. The link topic is an identical issue, but is easily fixed if  it's on a wood forend which the spacer can be shimmed, the syn forend isn't as "user friendly"!!
