off center primer strike
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:09:03 PM »
In my nef I have noticed that all the primer strikes are markedly off center. Quite a bit. all rounds go bang.

anyone else have this?

Is this a sign of other problems?

It just means the bore is off center a bit, or the underlug isn't welded on perfect. I have lots of Handis that the pin strike isn't quite centered, doesn't hurt anything. I've heard of them hitting right at the edge of the primer even, but they still shoot good. Just the imperfection of a $200 gun, the animals they kill don't know the difference!! ;D

....i'm off center myself, so if i tilt my head in the opposite direction of the strike, it evens out..... ;D

Do you mean left to right, or top to bottom off center? Remember, the firing pin on a NEF/H&R strikes the primer at an angle, not inline like most shotguns. I have some of them expensive other (autoloaders, pumps) shotguns, they all are not in the center either. I wouldn't let it worry me, as long as your lock-up is tight, it goes bang when you pull the trigger, and you can hit what you are aiming at.

the primer strike it to the Right of center. and I am having a difficult time finding a load that will shoot in it. So I stared wondering about lots of things I haven't bothered with earlier.

I had a 44 mag barrel fitted at the factory that hit the primer at the far edge of the primer also.I switched it to a different frame and it centered perfect, and it shot alot better.  Digger

a lot of rifles (if not almost every one), no matter what manufacturer hit off center.  Just the way they get all the pieces fitted together.
