.32mag barrel for handi
« on: February 08, 2007, 12:15:04 PM »
Does anyone make or own a .32mag barrel for the handi. Am looking for something to compliment my wife's model 31 s&w in.32SWL.

It's not available unless you have one custom bored a rechambered from something else. Only H&R sells barrels for the Handi, but a gunsmith can make anything that can be used safely on the Handi.

If the 7.62x39 barrel was a .311/.312" bore, that would do it.

Even if the 7.62x39 Handi was still made, it wouldn't work, the chamber diameter is over .100"  bigger than the 32 H&R.

Yep , i had one done over a year and 1/2 ago . I used a 22 mag. bull barrel as a doner , sent one of my Sportsters in for the barrel . then it went to a local smith to be re-bored and re-chambered .

Not a bad little gun , even though it has not lived up to what i had hoped it would , i have too much in it to get rid of it , between the cost of the barrel and the work i have just under $ 450.00 invested .

Ya Marv

As far as i know its a one of a kind , and to this day i still do not understand why H&R does not make one , you would think that the 32 H&R mag. would be a top line rifle for the H&R company ???

You know H&R is missing a bet here. If they would do a little custom work. Say they charged you $200.00 for a special barrel you'd pay it in a heart beat. Compared to what the custom Smiths are getting. They all ready have most of the barrel blanks they need.
They would need blanks for 22 rimfire 22 centerfire 243 257 264 270 284 308 310/311 323 338 357/358 40 41 429 451 458 .50
Excuse me if I missed your favorite caliber.
I can buy barrel banks for $65.00 a piece I know they can do better than that. There is a cost for reamers but you get several barrels out one before it is used up and if they are reamimg there own barrels then they are also sharping there own reamers.
The only limitation would be the action strength and the back thrust issue.

H&R isn't missing anything,  Marlin won't invest enough money to even have H&R bore the 44mag to a proper bore dimension or offer it or the .444 Marlin in the corect twist rate, what makes ya think they'll do something out of the box like offer custom calibers!

Gentlemen: Thanks for the quick responce. I think that if I was giong to spend 400+ I probably could get an old H & R falling block in .32 rim redone. Bore is a little rough, and someone has sanded the wood almost to oblivion, but it sure would be a classy little shooter.

There ya go !!  That's why I keep sayin' they will screw up the 45LC when they build it.  Almost as if they are TRYING to run H&R into the ground!  They got our hopes up last year with mgmt changes and inquiries "What do you think?" and....nothin'

Especially since Marlin sells a .32H&R lever action rifle.

I really like H and R, but they sure seem to have their heads... uh, in the clouds.  How 'bout a .32 mag, lightweight, not a crowbar for a barrell, with an EXTRACTOR, not ejector.  Come on, how much engineering experience do you need for that?  I can't believe they are in manufacturing and have never heard of Continuous Improvement.
I want them to succeed.

it will put the 32 mag to shame.......but im having trouble with the extractor<nothing new with rimles .simi rimmed cases>had the same problem with my 17 rem..i just carry a rod if ,WHEN they wont exject....i have no  sb2 actions and havent seen the new exjectors to see if i can make them,,,,,,i was working on a 9mm....i think im going to use E CLIPS on the rim and put the exstractor on the e clip so i wont have the problems......the only problem with the 762 /25 is hard primers and crossive ammo.....so i reload only ....brass is hard to find cheap stuff.......it will shoot the 110 grain carb bullets preety good my twist is a little fast 4 the 85/90 grainers.....i loaded some 130 leads to kill tree rats but it will be next season before i have a chance to try........the 32 mag was a 50 yard tree rat killer if you loaded them real hot.with slower powders...but im sure they would rip a pistol to shreads if shot in one.........i only had the rifle so i was safe...i broke my crony so i dont know the speeds but its faster than the pistol......lots faster......jb

JB, there's a link in the FAQs on the 2nd generation extractors, here's the thread.

I would love to find a .32 mag barrel, first thing I would do is run a .32-20 reamer into the chamber  ;D ;D

I have a real soft spot for that round, I am going to find me a rolling block action one day and build me one in .32-20, but if H&R would make one I would be first in line to get it.

I spoke with my gunsmith, today.  He said a ball park figure of $200 for a 32 Mag barrel done from a blank.  Wonder what extractor/ejector would work for that?(stimpylu32 ;D)

A cut down Hornet ejector/extractor should work. ;)

Thanks Tim.  I am assuming I would have to come up with a "doner" barrel to take the barrel and forend lugs from, right.  H&R is not gonna sell those to me, are they?
