22 cal project barrel need input

Have a new to me 24in bull 223 coming & wan't a different 22 caliber handi. Also Have 2 223 22in bulls that are great shooters.
I wanted a 219 Donaldson Wasp but it looks like the chamber of a 223 will not clean up enough. Want an older 22 cal so in looking i may have 3 choices but not sure of the rim face pressure for a handy in the rounds I am thinking of

if 219 wasp cannot clean up: looking at

219 zipper improved : load data hard to find at the moment
225 winchester : approx 50000 cup, case head 0.473
220 swift : approx 54000 cup, case head 0.473

which would be easier to find brass & dies without breaking the bank
Would prefer zipper or winchester for the rims on the case but zipper info harder to find, but the swift has a following

any comments sugestions hints would help, just would like an older style 22 cal for fun. Does not have to be the fastes 22 just different ;D even though tese choices look like I want speed. When I shoot them I generally shoot quite a few rounds in a day

also have some plans for a couple of hornets when I get them.

Go with a Swift if you have a spare 24" barrel, brass isn't bad and the dies are reasonable too. If you want a 219 you will need to find a 22 rimfire barrel to have rechambered so every thing will clean up.

 One hole45-70

 I took 22 Hornnet Barrel camber it with 219 zipper, My problem was brass.
 Had to make it, from 25-35. Had ejection problems with 30-30 Brass.
 Also changed Ejector to a 30-30 ejecter (from Brownells)
 Widen ejecter slot out with Moto- tool. Marv.

 PS all work was done by hand.

Avoid the 225Win,  brass is a real bugger to find.  I rechambered my first 22hornet to 225, although it shoots great - brass is a hassle to find.

220swift can be downloaded to 225win levels save on throat erosion and you can find swift brass anywhere.

Also, if you have one of the newer 1-in-9" twist barrels, you may want to avoid the both the 225 and the 220.  The twist rate at the velocities either of those two cartridge can achieve can cause havoc on thin jacketed slugs.   The 225 and 220 have a standard 1-in-12" to 1-in-14" twist rate.

I have that planned also for a hornet barrrel & a 221 fireball. Need 2 hornet barrels though. My sons' & my hornet shoot too well to mess with. Kind of wanted the trio of flying insects, hornet, Bee & Wasp. I could just get a 3rd hornet & ream it to a wasp. This will be done over time Trying to find a local smith to do it here in Oklahoma but may have to send it out.

That is good news on the 218 bee though by doing it by hand & if I mess it up it could become one of the other 2 ;)

Did you just run the 25-35 brass in the sizer die & trim as needed for the Bee brass

Knight0334 Thanks for the input. I think it is an older model should be here soon. Thats 2 for the 220 swift

I have done this with brass for a Nagant revolver to make brass for it, can't remember the parent case right off hand but it worked fine with a little lube


Hope someone knows a little about the above mentioned cartriges to point me in the right direction

The 225 Winchester would make a nice conversion...and brass is readily available thru several sources...here's just 1..http://www.grafs.com/metallic/648...With the faster 1:9 twist barrel...it would be very interesting with the longer heavier VLD's and match bullets...So to would the 22-250 but they shine with the 26" barrels...and 1:8 twist...Most of what I've seen shows the 225 with 22" or 24" barrels...So this would be the optimum choice for me...You also get a semi rimmed case for easier extraction to boot...

Winchester runs a lot of 225 Win brass for JD Jones at SSK Industries. Many of his Contender JDJ series use it for the base cartridge. The rim diameter is the same as the 30-06/Mauser cartridges, so the extractor/ejector problems should be minimal.

....if I ever get an extra .223 barrel, I'm going Swift. My bolt action will reach out there and touch anything, wicked little round too.

 You can NOT make 218 bee out of 25- 35 brass, Midway has 218 Bee brass. use 25-35
 brass to make 219 Zipper and wasp brass. Marv.

Few people with th 1-9" twist in the 223 have reported poor results with the heavier bullets. I think it has to do with the very shallow grooves and the long free bore in the Handi, the heavy bullets skip the the lands.

Putting more juice behind these bullets is not going to help matters. Most Handi will shoot well with the 1-12" twist and so are the 22-250's

On the contrary Fred...Putting more juice behind a much longer more concentric chambering will indeed help matters...for one there wouldn't be any excessive free bore to contend with...and I certainly don't believe that all the 1:9 barrels have very shallow grooves...perhaps not as deep as one would like..but usable never the less..I have heard of many folks having ho-hum accuracy with the 22-250 Handi's though...

you do not have to worry as much now days about throat erosion on hyper 22's as in years gone by! We have better powders(cooler burning/better cleaning techniques and better barrels.) 220 swift/22-250/223 wssm/220 jaybird/220 weatherby rocket/ect,ect, are not barrel burners as some people tend to think if you use the proper load data and shooting and cleaning techniques and are a blast to shoot. I have over 1200 rounds thru my m70 sporter in 223 wssm(40 gr BT at 4200 fps) and with 0% erosion....hodgdon makes a couple of diff powders that are ideal for the hyper 22's. A lot of oklahoma p-dogs have been called home to heaven with this at over 300 + yards. Art
