Versa Pack .22 barrel on SB1 frame report
« on: March 19, 2007, 04:23:19 PM »
The .22lr Versa Pack barrel I purchased from Spanky9773 arrived this afternoon.  I'm happy to report that it locks up and functions perfectly on my Topper (SB1) frame.  I ran a half dozen Remington Thunderbolts threw it just to test it for function and experienced no misfires or any other problems.  The barrel lug and outside diameter of the barrel at the breach appear to be identical to my original .410 barrel's as far as I can tell.  This pretty much confirms my suspicions that the Versa Pack frame is a standard SB1 frame.  I will give another report when I have had time to do some accuracy testing with it.  8)

Yep looks like I'll be keeping this one MSP, Sorry.  Hope you have good luck finding one for yourself. If I happen on another I will let you know buddy.   Now I really can't wait for the 20ga. barrel that Rio Grande is sending me so that I will have a home grown, 3 barrel "Super Versa Pack".

Thanks Brett, I do appreciate you keeping an eye open for one for me. I really am happy for you and that it works well for you. You were the one that finally difinitely answered a lot of questions about that barrel and combo unit. Thanks....<><.... :)

I have been watching these barrels sell on ebay for way over $100.  Really don't understand why NEF won't offer these as extra barrels.

Anyway, was in Walmart this morning and stopped by sporting goods to see if I could order a Versa-Pac at a good price.  Low and behold they had one in stock for $119.  Happy birthday to me!   :D

LUCKY DAY!!!, now if I could find one of those elusive .22 Versa Pak barrels, 2 would be even better
with one becoming a .22 WMR. That's my plan (one of several) and I'm sticking to it....<><....;D ;D

Guess this .410 I sent the barrel from to Andy is a SB1.

Anyway, it's centerfire. I put a HMR barrel on it and rechambered it.

Fit up and shooting is just perfect.  Haven't worked up a load for it yet,
But, that's in the process.

George what did you rechamber the .17 HMR barrel to? a .17 Remington? Which ejector did you use and did you have to do any modification to it? ....<><.... :)

MSP

Where does one have the 22 barrel reamed to 22 Mag? I have the 410 and was looking to add the 22 Mag.

Thanks

You could do the chamber youeself by hand with reamer & t-handle .

Or you could send it to Wayne York and have him do it , he does great work .

My buddy Stimpy is right on the money with his response....I was lucky enough to get a Versa Pack .22 LR barrel and it fit and shot great on the first SB1 shotgun barrel I tried it on, now I need one more to rechamber to .22 Mag so I am still looking for another one....<><....:)

Thank You Stimpy and MSP

A local pawn shop has a new Versa pack for $139. I was thinking both ways which would be to find a barrel or buy new. I do have a 410 if I could find a barrel. Good Luck right. For the rental tools I am guessing I would need a lathe which I don't have but might have access to one and a machinist. What is a ballpark price from Wayne. Would he D & T for a scope mount?

Thanks
Grant

MSP how did you find that 22lr barrel? Keep your eyes open for one for me!

Grant if you wind up with 2 of the 410 barrels let me know I would be interested in taking it off your hands. If you buy the versapak sell me the extra 410.

I will be happy to keep my eyes open however the next one I find (if I am THAT lucky) is going to be mine and be transformed into a .22 Mag. Just check the classifieds often, I was lucky enough to find one here and jumped right on it before others here did, they are few and far between, the one for $139 sounds like the way to go and if you want you could sell the second .410 barrel to help offset the price....
You should not need a lathe to do the rechamber, just a handle to turn the reamer and plenty of cutting oil, go slow and easy with very little pressure and check often. Ask the rental company for hints on it's use and which style you should get for your intended use....<><....:)

If I go new and decide to sell the 410 barrel it will be yours.

Thank You for the info. One (maybe) more question. What is available for sights other than the open variety? These old eyes can't use open sights.

I am not sure why I want to do this except it sounded neat to have.

Thanks

The Versa Pack barrel comes drilled and tapped for a scope rail so it would be a simple matter to mount any scope or red dot that you wanted, or you could mount a receiver sight using the same holes....<><.... :)

Thanks MSP

I guess I didn't notice the D&T part of the barrel. I think I did mention old eyes. Now you know for sure.

why are the 410 barrels so popular? am I missing out on something?   I am getting a versa pack on the first of next month, but all I want it for is the 22. I'm going to be ditching the 410 barrel, and replacing the synthetic stock with a full size wooden one.

Poomwah,
Please ditch that sucker my way. Yhe reason I am looking at em is for Iddy Biddy grandkids. I don't want to start them out flinching. I have a 28 ga. on the way, but have been on the lookout for a .410 barrel.
