NEF 44 magnum loads chronograph results SOLO 4100 powder
« on: March 27, 2007, 12:38:15 AM »
I chronographed the NEF .44 mag loads using the SOLO 4100 powder.
I thought my CHRONY was malfunctioning because the first 3 shots clocked in at 1562. The 3 shot were in a .650" cluster. The next 2 shots were one ragged hole .75" below the first 3 shots. They clocked in at 1579, and 1599.
The total group size ended up being 1.418" (50 yards)

I then shot a 100 yard 3 shot group 1.778" average velocity 1578fps.

The load data:
Winchester Brass (new)
240 gr Hornady XTP
20.3 gr SOLO 4100
WLP primers
Firm roll crimp at the leading edge of the cannelure.

The Barrel is new from NEF (less 1 month old)
I haven't slugged the barrel, but my wife slugged me when I handed her the bill!;D

I don't think I'll be shooting cast so I don't really see a need to slug it except the it will appease a rising curiosity amoung the rabid NEF owners.  ;)

Your correct there buddy, many here have been waiting in the wings for H&R/NEF to produce a properly sized .44 Mag barrel, something in the .429 to .430 range so it would shoot factory ammo and standard sized, not only oversized bullets or full power loads well....<><....  :)

I also am curious, but I understand if you if you don't want to slug it.  simply looking at the bore may tell the story--is it micro-groove type rifling?  If not it may be that all the new 44 caliber barrels are broached and 1-20 twist.

How about checking the twist rate and the rifling type for us??

Thankfully it is not microgroove.

Hey Marv,
 Hope you're doing well.
The primers I'm using are WLP is says on the card for large pistol or magnum loads. My .41 mag seems to prefer the these WLP primers.
Dad is doing well. I don't don't shoot as much at the house range since I built another house on the property. Some folks don't like the sound of freedom, if you know what I mean.
