2007 New River Valley Mortar and Cannon OPEN firepower demonstration is hereby declared to be in the planning stage.

Lance has expressed interest (and lives close by) and several other folks from time-to-time have asked about a get-together in Virginia/NC area.

We need to establish a date and then a location.

The event will be limited to those black powder mortars/cannons/gonnes of pre 1899 build or design, consistent with the rules of this board.

Appropriate focus on safety and sobriety will be made.

And GBO Tee-shirts and baseball caps will be encouraged.

The key issue is black powder and alcohol do not mix;  later is optional.

Suggestions for dates?  Locations?

Ed - sounds good!

well since the VA.tech shootings, probably be best to avoid that location, let them have some peace and quiet. now you have a friend in willis, i work 4 miles from willis- floyd county is a great place to do things if ya know what i mean!!! just a thought for now.......

I couldn't make anything in the next 6 months, but if this turns into an annual thing, it's certainly within road-trip distance with a bit of planning! I've never been out that way, and that's as good as an excuse as I need!

Tim,

Sounds like you guys are planning on having way too much fun.  Mike and I rarely pass up such opportunities, and it just so happens that we will finishing up our research trip to New York and New England during that 4th of July week!  What's a little 200 mile detour on the way back to Colorado?  If you are thinking about July 5th thru the 8th we can make it.  We will arrive complete with ordinance, of course.  Mike and I are looking forward to meeting a bunch of eastern GBO cannoneers!!  :) :)

Regards,

Tracy and Mike

Tracy, MIke -

You know of course that this will raise the QUALITY of the event from a back-woods get together to an event of national significence!

Needless to say we would be thoroughly honored with your presence.

So, how does Saturday, July 7th, 2007 sound to everyone?

I have a friend who is checking in on availability of a site near Pilot, VA. and there are other places as well.

I'm looking forward to this being a participatory event, bring something to shoot, if you don't have something come anyway and light someone else's fuse!

Saturday, July 7th sounds great.  Those of us unfamiliar with your neck of the woods need an address that we can google map and use as a meeting place, and also a start time too.

Backwoods sound just dandy, Tim.  Should we bring a couple of turkeys and a section of a log with us, or will you be supplying those?  How about an axe, pumkin balls and balloons?  Maybe full size guns, Lance?  We will bring ear plugs AND muffs!!  This will be the highlight of our trip.

Before you ask, the answer is YES!

Location is still up for grabs, but should be able to lock it in one place or another soon.

Let's find a window for the time (or perhaps Sunday afternoon the 8th) that works.

I checked my schedule and it looks like I can make the 8th. I can possibly show up late on the 7th but am committed to a Confederate Marker dedication. I'm not sure when that will end. You sure you mortar men wont mind if a show up with a full scale 1841 6 pdr gun?

Cap't Earl -

WELCOME to the board!

Because the 8th is Sunday, I think mid afternoon would be appropriate.  (Lance - what does your schedule look like?)

(For those of you wondering what's going on behind the scenes, Earl and I happen to work in the same building.)

It will be indeed a pleasure for all involved to be graced with both long and short tubes, full and scaled down,

Having seen your performance with the '41, I'm sure that it'll be star of the show.

Thanks for the welcome and the kind words CW. I will talk to another member of my Battery and see if he is interested in joining in with the live shoot. He has shot NSSA and has sights on his 6-pdr as well as the hause, level, quadrant etc. Can't promise anything but, we may have the "Bronze Sisters" on the field. Not only do I work with Tim, I am also good friends with Lance. We are in the same SCV camp and have shot black powder pistols etc. a few times together at a mutual friends place.

Captain Earl, i knew it was only a matter of time, hey it saves me from having to tell you about all this stuff. i planned to tell you this weekend at the  confederate grave dedication, but i have to work more overtime. for those of you that don't know Captain Earl, he is really a great guy, also a top notch artillery man. pre-warning, me and Captain get into it at times, mostly just pickin, but i don't think there will be any bloodshed at the great shoot. really, i would take a bullet for Captain Earl. but, sometimes he makes me so mad, i feel like putting one in him....................welcome to the board Captain Earl

Lance - since the 8th works, I'm looking at doing this for somewhere between 2 and 4 hours, depending on how many folks show up.  Perhaps starting a 2pm?

Capt'n Earl - You can't beat that welcome from Lance, sounds right-much as straight up as they come!

Rick - Lookin' forward to shootin' with y'all (finally).

All -  looks like this is growing.  I think it would be a good idea to organize a bit and have a range officer and several safety officers.  Might be just a few, but there is a growing number of folks that I know that want to watch.

Tim, the 8th will be fine, ask others though. i said from the start i'd be glad to help in any way. since i have a concealed handgun permit, had to get that  because of earl, anyway i'm well trained in all manner of firearms, weapons and safety. so you can put me down for a safety officer. oh, and Tracy, Mike of seacoastartillery, really looking forward to meeting you and seeing those beautiful works of art you build. don't forget your ear plugs and muffs, the full size guns you were hoping for are coming.......

Lance,

Mike and I are looking forward to meeting you and everyone who shows up.  We are turning more 100 Pdr. Bolts this evening and should have enough bullets and charges made up to be able to shoot in Vermont, Mass., and now, Virginia.   You southern gentlemen should be happy to know that our recently completed 7" Treble-Banded Brooke Rifle just edged out our 100 Pdr. Parrott Rifle in (100 yard) accuracy tests.  It put 4 shots into 1.1" before a flier ruined the group.  The Parrott's best was 1.4".  Some potential there, we think.  My son figured out how ACME Mapper 2.0 works, so we now know where to go on Sunday the 8th.

Best regards,

Tracy and Mike

Now for the most part, I am just a reenactor. I can count the number of artillery live-fires I've participated in on one hand. I have a lot of getting ready to do for this. The biggest thing is I've got to get together something to shoot.  I am certainly looking forward to meeting new friends and learning a little something.

Lance- I am shocked to hear that I have made you mad in the past. My sincerest apologies. I have never felt anything but the warmest of friendship toward you. ( I bet your getting that mad feeling right now huh )

My next visit to America, land of the free and home of the brave is the Last week in  August...

It would be no fun for me knowing my 1841 Boat howitzter is in storage some where in Maryland, I sold one golf ball mortar to Blaster, gave the other one to my friends kid in Idaho, my  Parrot rifle and  6 PDR mortar is in Powderkegs shop....and I can't keep my feet of the furniture!
