Factory Irons shooting low?
« on: June 26, 2007, 09:58:27 AM »
Ok I only have two factory iron sighted barrels, but both are so low at 25 yds the rear ramp is barely in the slot.  One is 357mag the other 45/70 BC.  Anybody else noticing this?  Just curious.

Nothing new, H&R probably put the wrong front sights on em. Many BCs come with the .584" 17A front sight, I put a .404" tall 17A sight on my 45-120, many others have too. The .494" is probably the best choice for most.

You can have H&R send you the correct sight for the 357, or you can file the front sight down yourself to bring POI up if it's a plain blade sight. It it's one of the bead sights or a fiber optic, contact H&R.

You can also upgrade the front sight on the 357 with fiber optics if it doesn't have one, see the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs.

Thanks Tim,...I kind of figured when I first opened the box on the 357mag.  I thought I could butter bread with that sight.  I will probably replace with a firesight.  As for the 45/70 I need some elevation so I guess I'll contact H&R for replacement.

How is the measurement taken.  Bottom of dovetail to center of globe? :-\ :-\   I really never had to do this.  Time to learn.

Yes, that's how the 17A sight is measured.

Contacted H&R about BC 45/70.  Rep said to send barrel back.  I asked if other height sights were available and she said they only stock one size and it was .584".  I further asked what would be done to correct and she said hard to tell without knowing why shooting low.  They would need barrel.

NOT what I was looking for. >:(

Is this a common practice to request barrels back?

Yes, in the case of the BC because the front sight is fitted in a dovetail. They told me the same thing when I emailed them about mine shooting low, I just ordered a .404" front sight and installed it my self. It's not hard to fit a dovetail sight, just takes a file and a little trial and error until it fits snug, then stake it in place if it's too loose. I know they have .494" sights cuz that's what should come in it and others have received that sight in theirs!!

Just a heads up in case you'd like different front sight inserts, the Lee Shaver set is real nice.

Another option would be to file down a post insert to raise POI, never tried it, just a thought. ;)

I just finished ordering from Buff Arms.  I got the 494 and special inserts.

Once again... Thank You Tim.

Anybody want to buy globe front sight. ::)

Would old sight work on 45 LC barrel if dovetailed out, or still too low for it also?

Yes, the .584" sight should work on the 45Colt carbine barrel, it's just about the same height, but the base of the 17A sight is just a smidge wider at .572" compared to about .550" for the Colt sight.

I had the same problem a couple years back with my SIDEKICK.

I solves the problem with all new sights. I didnt like the plastic crap anyhow.... I put on a T/C rear site (I had on hand) and a williams "firesite" front blade. (I bought)

I dont seem to be able to find the pic of the front sight... but this fixed the problem nicely and I got some great sights for very little cost!!
