Cheap Scope Base
« on: July 08, 2007, 02:57:24 PM »
For those that are mechanically inclined, here's one way to take advantage of the $8 Weaver #82 scope rail.

1. First step is to cut the flat off at the rear of the rail, I used a hack saw, then cleaned it up on a belt sander.

2. Then place the rail in a drill vise with another rail on top of it as a template for the two new holes that need to be drilled, use the rear most hole to index off of by sticking a drill bit thru both rails, then clamp it tight in the vise, drill the middle and front holes.

3. Then counter sink the holes to the same depth as the original hole.

4.  Last step is cut additional cross slots if you need them, I used a carbide toothed blade in my table saw, it makes quick work once the depth of the cut it adjusted, I used the existing slot to get the blade just right, it's also the same width as the original cross slots!

5.  Touch up the bright metal with a black marker, all done!! ;)

I have 5 of em that I've taken off used rifles/barrels and decided I needed an easy way to use em, so I did it to 3 of em, but that flat spot I cut off is kinda handy sometimes, makes room for the ocular bell on a low mounted shotgun scope just ahead of the hammer for one thing!! ;D

The base on the current 30 carbine barrel is one of those, I cut off the overhang and milled a slot it the base with the milling attachment on my little 6 inch Atlas lathe.  I have no idea why Weaver builds them the way they do.  Larry

I can't figure out how to cut a slot without a table saw or a sliding miter saw or whatever.  I debated on a file but getting good angles made me backburner it.

I've cut them before using a file, hack saw or dremel burr, use a square to mark it, then cut it. The table saw/carbide blade idea just came to me when I was cutting the flat part off in the vise out in the shop!! :D

The table saw idea is a good one Tim!! Just hold that sucker tight!!! Its way easy to keep it square with this method!!

I have made these slots with a dremel for years. The chain saw sharpener bit works perfectly and cuts pretty quickly. The only thing is keeping it square. Go slow and clamp the base in a vise 90 degrees from the dremel.

I have to make one of these myself today. Don't want to wit for one from H&R...I'll have that Hornet tomorrow and want to shoot it right away!!

FWIW, the Gun Source has the factory scope rail for $13.95, the part number is the same as the factory one that comes with hammer extension, but dunno if it actually includes it, I ordered a couple to find out. They charge $7.45 shipping for one or 3 rails, didn't check more than that.

Here's a good choice for blackening the scope rail after modification, would work fine on the factory scope rail for touch up. I've looked for it locally, but no one has it, Midsouth has the best price on it.

I used an OLD STYLE base on the Hornet. The only diff I could find was in the radius of the barrel, this one was smaller. So, I re-cut the radius to the Handi diameter with a piece of alum oxide paper wrapped around the barrel and some elbow grease. I ended up with a base that PERFECTLY matches the contour of my barrel!!

Also I was surprised not to find a hammer extension in with the Hornet!!

That's the first base I've seen like that!! The hornet comes with sights, so they don't pack a rail or extension with it, they only do that with rifles that aren't iron sighted, which the hornet normally is. ;)

I got the rails from TGS, 2 rails and shipping were $35.35, they do indeed come with the hammer extension, so their price is good at $13.95 each. ;)

Thanks for that info about the rails from TGS Tim  ;D sounds like a good deal. And just FYI I have one of the 'old style' rails like CW has on his Hornet. Mine is on my 30/30 Topper, which has the shiny gold colored hammer I got from you! Also has an older Weaver K3 scope, and a mannlicher stock so it kinda looks like one of the old 1970's style Toppers... much like the first H&R I ever had, years ago, even to the same scope and rings!

I've been in touch with customer service at H&R and that is what they charge as well. Only difference, they charge $7.50 to ship.

H&R wants $18 for the scope rail with extension, TGS charges $13.95 for both, shipping is on top of either one, if you order two or more rails from TGS, you'll come out way ahead of H&R's price, shipping is still only $7.50. ;)

Well then that is a most excellent price. In the quote I used you weren't sure at that time if the extension was included. Great Deal!!
