Would you sell a Winchester 30-30 for a Henry 30-30 ?
« on: July 20, 2007, 12:45:23 PM »
Rumor has it that the Henry Repeating Company is coming out with a new 30-30 lever action rifle in 2008.

So, the question is this: Would you sell a Winchester Legacy 30-30 rifle and buy the new Henry 30-30 rifle instead?

You've got to be kidding, right?
There's nothing  that would get me to sell a Winchester 94, albiet even a USRAC Winchester, for an unproven new design from a reborn company that likes to use mystery metal for their receivers with painted on finishes. Shall I go on?   I have some 30+ Winchesters, some old, some new, and I just hope my kids and grandkids don't pawn them off after I'm gone- I have yet to buy my first Henry, and unless the fit , finish and materials jump up in quality a whole bunch, I probably won't add one to my collection. Sorry to be so strongly biased, it may have been different if John Wayne or Chuck Conners had carried Henrys instead of Winchesters-

Nope!

My neighbor bought a Henry .22LR.  He got it home and gave it a good going over and cleaning.  While doing so, he discovered that the barrel band AND sights were made of PLASTIC.  Come-on!!!!  Plastic sights??????

I have owned 2 Henry's and still own 3 Winchesters.  The last trade I did was trade a Henry as down payment for a Win trapper.   Both fine rifles in their own respect.  each has issues, but I have to agree with ALL of the above advice, NO!  If you want a different 30-30 get a Marlin or trade for the Winnie you want.

I'd trade my trapper for another Win, MAYBE a BLR, but not a Henry.  Their fine rifles, but NO.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Yes I would and to help you out I'll take that Winchester 94 off your hands now so you could be ready when the Henery hit the market

I sold a Henry to get a Winchester. I`ll never own another Henry. The brass reciever is some sort of painted pot metal. What piece of junk, or at least the one I had ( not to critize any Henry owners just one mans opinion ).  I`m sure the older collector Henrys are real brass recievers. I`d go with the Winny.

I wouldn't sell any of my Winchesters for anything. Now, I might buy something else, but I won't sell a Winnie to do it.

I swapped a 94 angle eject for a Glock 22 and would do it again in a heartbeat.  I have a 9422M that is much better than the late model angle eject was, and that one stays in my collection.  I wonder if I have to go back to a pre 64 to get one I like.  The angle eject shot OK, but was so ratty in fit and finish that it needed to go.

No I would keep the Winchester in fact I prefer them to Marlins but that is my opinion If some one gave me a Marlin I would hang on to that too in fact my first lever gun was a Marlin. In all fairness to the Henrys they are fine guns and accurate shooters and while you guys pee and moan about the plastic  and the Alloy metal look at a lot of other guns that do the same including RUGER. My Henry 22 mag is a very accurate rifle I am very happy with it and Henry has the Best Customer Service bar none in the gun business. For the Record you have a henry with plastic bands and front sight contact Henry and tell them you want to up grade to metal parts last I heard you could still do that I did on my 22 mag.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I don't think I'd trade a Winnie for a Henry, but I might buy the Henry outright, if the price is right. I have to say I'd trade a Winnie for a Marlin 336 though

OK lets be fair !
If the win. has more than one of the following defects then maybe !
bbl missing , receiver cut in half , home gunsmith ported bbl back past chamber , gun had been a complete loss in 2 different fires , gun had spent a coons age on a swamp bottom ! welder had practiced his trade on parts of gun , or it had been bent in half !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

without question, the henry big boys are the smoothest leveractions i've shot, nothing going on with them, the painted finish is designed so that "cover" can be replaced if scratched up beyond repair.  i have no particular love for winchesters at all, too young to care a lick about the rifleman or whoever else carried a winchester.  wish they'd make a casull lever action as well, i will own several henry's.
a gun owner that votes dem is an oxymoron with the emphasis on moron.

mk454, I have to agree with what you said about Henry's having the smoothest lever actions. I just bought the youth model for my boy and I got to say the action was smooth as silk...I was pretty impressed but I have to say that I still have a deep passion for Winchesters and prefer them to all but maybe a Marlin...depends on the gun.

don't get me wrong, i love my friend's winchester 45/70 and i love my guide gun, but emotionalism aside, if you were new to guns and wanted a lever action and cycled all the above, tell me you wouldn't leave with a henry, even my 12 year old comments on how he likes the henry 45 colt my friend has cuz it doesn't kick (it's heavy as well) and as he puts it, "it works easier."  not to mention looks great, and i don't fault henry a bit for having pseudo brass, why would i complain about getting the look i love, with stronger metal?  that's like not buying a freedom arms b/c you wish it was made out of an old tech stainless that would wear out quick because that's what they were made out of when we all rode horses, makes no sense to me.

I prefer Marlins by far, but the Winchesters are nice and getting more valuable everyday.  The Henrys are way too expensive and heavy.  I do like their cheap 22s but you have to repaint the receiver pretty often.

No don't trade!
