seen my first henry
« on: August 05, 2007, 10:07:36 AM »
I was in the gun shop Saturday and they had a new 357 mag henry  on the shelf.  $729  I do like that rifle.  It was all I could do to leave it behind.

Talked about the rifle to much.  My wife went out and bought it for me.  Can't wait to go shoot it.

I bought a Henry 22 mag lever action and it worked fine this summer, but today it would not eject the spent shells.

Where is the safety on the Henry 44?  I looked at one, and it didn't have a half cock or a button safety.

did you get it to eject right?  Well the 357 will not feed my 180 grain bullets.Winchester. But it feeds the 125 grain bullets fine. All brands.  Shoots great.  Tried the 158 grain sp but the miss feed the very last bullet in the tube.

I called Henry and got a recording to leave message to call me back.   Called again today and got a live person to answer who said I would be receiving a call today, which I did not. Hopefully I will hear from them soon.

The failure to eject problem may be a case of a slightly-too-long firing pin, and a little dry-firing.  I had the same problem with mine, a buddy dry-fired it several times (when I was out of the room, or I'd have clubbed him with it!) and it raised a small burr on the top of the chamber mouth.  Loaded rounds would feed  and eject okay, but sometimes fired rounds would hang up, and had to be pried out.  (Prying rimfire cases always scares the bejesus out of me, I had one detonate a long time ago, and it almost cost me an eye.)  Anyway, I got out my Dremel and my finest polishing bit, and polished the burr out.  Now it's fine, though a little finicky when it's really dirty.

As for the 180's not feeding in the 357, is the OAL excessive?  It could also be a nose profile that just doesn't like the ramp and chamber mouth.  Do 158's feed okay?

Solved the feed problem on the 357 mag.  The tube rod(holds the bullets) was nasty wouldn't let the bullets feed.  Cleaned it and problem seems to have gone away.

I just put a Henry youth lever gun on order for my youngest boy, who's almost 8yrs old, for CHRISTmas and should be here Thursday. I wanted to get him what I got when I was his age which was a Marlin Mountie (my 1st gun that I bought with a paper route job when I was 8 or 9yrs old) but have heard good things about these Henry's, and you can't beat the price!! I can't wait to see his face when he gets it.

are you going to get him into any type of small game hunting after a little practice with it?

Sure, he'll hunt with it, that's the whole idea and he's already been practicing with my mountie.

Picked up my sons Henry youth lever today. Looks like a fine little American made rifle. The action is smooth as silk. Now the wait to give it to him and see how it shoots.

My younger son has not hunted yet. Here in Ma. they require youths to be 12yrs old. He is planning to go along with me when I go.  My oldest son hunts and so will the young one when he reaches the proper age. Pratice, practice, practice for now.
