Lever Evolution range report
« on: October 29, 2007, 12:11:47 PM »
Just another of many reports to add to the mix.  Took two Marlin .30-30s-a 336CS and a 30AS-out to run a quick check with the wunderammo.  The first two shots (off sand bags @ 100yds.) from each rifle printed a group about 3/4".  May be operator error, but the 336CS's 3rd shot opened the group up to over 2".  The 30AS, however, printed three shots in just a hair over 7/8".  Impact point was about 4" higher than the Remington factory 170 in the 30AS and about 8" higher than the Rem. 170 for the 336CS.  (Can't explain the discrepancy).

I'm not going to hunt with the wunderammo this year, but I have a stash purchased on a sale I've squirreled away for future use.  This experience bears some more experimentation.  The scopes I used were fixed power-2.5 and 2.75X.  I'm sure that a bit more magnification may have helped a bit.

Peter,  What year is your 30AS ?  I'm thinking about trying the LE ammo in my 30 AS.

Sixshooter:  I'd have to look back through my records to get an exact date, but it seems to me that it's an '88 or '89.  Found it literally caked with cosmoline (and like new) on a used rack two years ago.  $200 OTD ;D.  A bit of a story here:  I took the gun to the range with great excitement, after some attempts to clean up the barrel and action.  To my chagrin, the beast wouldn't pop the cap!  First, I replaced the main hammer spring.  Still, no good.  Eventually I had to strip the bolt and clear all cosmoline out of the firing pin channel.  Viola!

I've been interested to read the shooting experiences others have had with the new ammo. Clearly works very well for some and no so well for others.  Seems to me that Hornady has come up with a good product...and with prices on other ammo going through the roof, the Lever Evolution stuff is even priced competetively.  Still, I have plenty of "Plain Jane" stuff from the major ammo manufacturers on hand, and it remains excellent in quality, accuracy and game-getting efficiency.  Remington Core-lokts and Winchester Power-Points will be riding in our family Marlins on November 15.

Good luck with your 30AS!  (Let us know how you fare).

I've had good luck with the Leverevolution in a 1965 microgroove 444. Sighting in under 1 MOA. It's not designed for that twist, but I'll take it. Hard to find ammo in Colorado so I buy it when I'm in AZ on business. At just under $30 a box, I will be looking to get into reloading soon, although Hornady doesn't offer the rubber tip bullets yet as far as I know.

I kinda doubt they will be offering them any time soon if at all Stout. But if you want to reload, and use a really high quality bullet, for that .444 I would suggest the 265 FP interloc bullet from Hornady. It really puts a whacking on deer and Elk with my loads. Not had either step more than 20 yards after smacking them with those. Great penetration and they retain most of their weight even after hitting a shoulder bone on an Elk. A lot of people tend to think that those "pistol" bullets wouldn't hold up to a heavy boned animal but I have yet to ever have any problems whatsoever with them. I have the micro grooved barrel as well and it stabilizes them just fine. With my load I hold sub MOA all day at 100.

As far as the wunderbullet I tested them myself and found excellent results as well. But I just enjoy reloading and I have no need for the extra range they would produce. Although I did read several reports that the "wunderbullet" did penetrate extremely well and the method I used showed that as well (wet compressed newspaper in between 3/4 plywood) They did about equal to my 265 loads, and I load a little hot, as far as penetration. But as I said I enjoy reloading and it saves about 28% in cost. Got a wild 3 year old that already eats like ME so I save ANYWHERE I can LoL
You want a divorce if I go hunting today??? Well sorry ta see ya go...Was nice knowin ya..Dont let tha door hit ya where tha good lord split ya :D

So what is your mojo load there cam69conv? I'll save it and work some up as soon as I get some reloading equipment.      Thanks!
