7 - Steps to a Handi WILDCAT

Now lets see .

step 1 - think up some hair-brained idea . 

step 2 - do some research .

step 3 - buy donor barrel - in my case its a 22 Hornet .

step 4 - send the barrel to the gun smith .

step 5 - form and load some test rounds .

step 6 - wait till all the parts come together to shoot .

step 7 - enjoy a one-of-a-kind-Handi . 

I'm at step 6 and holding on my latest one the 224GNR .

Ya its a 357 max case , the first form is done in a Lee 222 Rem die and the final is done in the custom Hornady 224 GNR die, i use the 222 just to get the neck down to size then the gnr to set the sholder and finish the neck . should give me just over 222 Rem speeds but with a rimmed case and about 2/3 the powder .

I use the 357 Mag trimmer just to square up the neck . I so far have some loads with 35, 40 and 55 grain Hornady V-max also 50 grain Speer's loaded , using H-4895 and IMR 4227 .

Thanks Marv , it will be there , you can shoot it along with the 218 Bee .  . i might even bring the .577-450 MH if its done in time .

That should make a very fine cartridge for the Handi.
When are you expecting to get your barrel back?
I always hate the waiting part on exciting gun projects, seem like it takes forever.
Let us know how it shoots when you get it back.
Do you have a chronograph?

Barrel should be here in about 8 weeks , hes realy backed up right now , but if he can he said it would be sooner . As for a Chrono , i have one coming form Mama for CHRISTmas , she kinda let it slip .

As for a Chrono , i have one coming form Mama for Christmas , she kinda let it slip .

You will really appreciate the chronograph. My wife got one for me for Christmas several years ago and I have gotten alot of good use out of it. When working with wildcats they are especially helpful and you will discover that some of your book loads aren't what you thought.
I have reached max velocity in my 223 Contender and SRH 454 well before max powder charges were reached and this is were I stopped. Without the chronograph I may have went to the max powder charge and I feel the pressures would have been more than they should be.
Chronographs are a great tool for the handloader, for both the knowledge of the load and the safety of yourself.
