357 Survivor

My local gun shop has a NEF 357 Survivor.  I have been wanting a 357 rifle for a while and I really like the Survivor stocks, especially in a light recoiling caliber. I looked on the H&r website and don't see the 357 Survivor listed, when where these made?  I am probably returning tomorrow to put it on layaway.  Can I order extra barrels for the survivor model?  It is an SB2 frame, but what about the handguard with the bull barrel channel.  Would I need another handguard for sporter weight barrels?

I found a previous post about a pre-96 357 Survivor with nickel frame, if it's an SB2 frame and made before '99, you'll be limited to low pressure chamberings, those marked with an * on the accessory barrel list. The best way to find out what can be fitted is to call H&R and give them the serial number, they'll tell you. toll free (866)776-9292, you can email them too hr1871@hr1871.com

I wouldn't worry about the forend fit, all forends have the same channel with the exception of the 10g/12ga USH, all barrels are about the same size where the forend fits with the exception of the Superlights, the taper is just different.

Thanks for the help.

I went back and put it on layaway.  It is must have been lost in the basement, because it is  NEW IN BOX, but the model number indicates that it is a 1996 model (NK).

Congrats, that also means it's an ejector model, considered a plus by most! ;)

You may have trouble seeing the factory sights w/the Survivor set up . I know I did with mine when I swapped it over for a look see. Went back to the regular straight wood stock and am now looking for a set of BC stocks for it. Kurt

I have a set of Survivor stocks on my .22 Mag Sportster fitted with a Millet Red Dot which is my favorite Maine winter coyote gun to this date. I have no problem with using the the Red Dot and have shot it with open sights also with no problems at all. Try it and I think you will like it. Congratulations on a great find!!!....<><....:)

  The first H&R rifle that caught my eye  several years ago was the 357 mag survivor rifle , just sounded like a great little versitile rifle thats ammo wouldnt be as combersome to pack in bulk as say a 308 or 223 should it be needed to feel the role for which it is named ... Anywho always liked and wanted one , Guess i could just buy a survivor stock my other halves 357 mag handi  ;D

You mean the ones without an *. 

It doesn't matter because I already have a 243 Handi that is new enough to receive the higher pressure barrels.  I have been wanting to get a 357 barrel, but I was worried about using open sights with the Monte Carlo stock.  I would like to get a 20 ga barrel for the Survivor though.

I didn't have any trouble seeing the factory sights.  The only complaint I have is because of the age of the gun, the sights are not fiber optic. :(

Yes my 243 is an ejector and the 357 is as well.  I also prefer the ejector to the extractor.  It allows for a faster reload if ever needed.  This survivor is going to be my camp gun.

I like the 357 for a packable rifle too.  When I get some cashflow I will be getting a synthetic youth stock and a Survivor forearm for my 357 barrel and selling off my wood.  I like the thumb screw on the forearm, but have a homebrew socket screw version to try with regular synthetic too. 

I will sacrifice some accuracy potential for losing some weight too.

How come the new 357 mag handi doesn't have irons sights?

It's a max 100 yard rifle and they put a scope base on it instead.  What are these people thinking?

It's more "handi" if it has iron sights!

As Tim mention I have a .357 model made in 96.It has a nickle plated receiver and barrel.
It came with the standard black stock and forearm,it has seen several changes since, including
a Max. reaming. Buy one .You'll like it.

best of luck Aaron. A .357 Mag Handi with a Survivor stocks set, an exjector model, NIB and staright from the factory (in 1996 no less!!!). Congratulations buddy, it sounds like one of the handiest Handi's out there. Don't forget to load up some low power loads (ala .38 Special mid range wadcutter) to plink with. They are great fun and handy for pests and vermin. For all sorts of pests I like to load these loads with the hollowbase wadcutters backwards with the hollowbase becoming a BIG hollowpoint. Great loads for anything that wants to bother you or the garden. Please follow up with a range and fun report....<><.... ;)

Whoa!  I just ordered a .357 Brl.  Are you saying it will not have iron sights?  I was not planning on putting a scope on it.

The accessory barrel has sights unless they changed it, the 2008 SB1 357 comes with a scope rail and no sights.

As Tim mentioned in his post I have a 1996 .357 Survivor I bought new in 2002.
It has a nickel receiver and barrel with the standard low comb synthetic stock.
It has been retro ed with the fire sights from a later Handi has been fitted with  .223,45-70
and 12 gauge barrels.
