NEED HELP FROM ALL PLEASE!
« on: February 11, 2008, 05:49:08 AM »
I called H&R/NEF this morning in regards to the 22 Hornet.  I was told by the service lady "it appears to be discontinued completely for 2008"  :o  At first I thought that the plastic stock would remain............not so.

I asked if letters or e-mail were sent by those disappointed would this help?  She replied "yes" and was kind enough to get me the correct e-mail for this task.  UPDATE - SEND E-MAIL DIRECTLY TO H&R/NEF  hr1871@hr1871.com

It is to the marketing department.

If you would like to see the 22 Hornet stay in the Handi rifle line up,  please e-mail the following

I have drafted a rough letter to make it easy for you.  Use it cafeteria style, delete what you do not want, then simply cut and paste the rest.

Thank you for your time
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

e-mail address -  UPDATE / SEND THEM DIRECTLY TO H & R / NEF
To whom it may concern,

I have been informed that the 22 Hornet Handi rifle (aka – Handi Hornet) has been discontinued for 2008 in both wood & plastic stock.

I was disappointed to hear this news.

As one whom enjoys the Handi Hornet and has recommended it to others I hope that this decision will be reversed ASAP.

Some of the reasons are as follows.

•   The traditional varmint caliber
•   Ideal walking/calling varmint caliber
•   Fun to shoot
•   Ideal for break action single shots
•   Low muzzle blasts fits less wide open hunting terrain available today
•   Less costly to re-load than purchasing rim fire magnum ammo
•   I have to believe with fewer wide open spaces available to hunt and the rise in cost of rim magnum ammo, sales were good.

Please consider keeping it in the preferred standard wood stock for years to come.

Signed Handi Rifle Shooter

EDITED: Bill, I just got an email from my H&R/Marlin contact, C. Heyl has nothing to do with H&R products, please send emails to H&R, Gordon will collect them and send them on to Marketing and Sales.

This is exactly what you get when a small customer service oriented company gets sucked up by a giant money grubbing company.  You can bet that any thing or service (there will be no exceptions) that doesn't make X amount of profit will be gone.  What we really need a re a few leaked internal company memo's, now that would be interesting.  Larry

It does seem to feel good to complain sometimes, but unless you are calling or emailing them to buy a Hornet barrel (or a hundred) it just isn't going to matter.  They report to a higher authority now.  Larry

I'd never have thought the 22 Hornet would be canceled. Does anyone know the sales figures and ammo sales figures?

Called H&R, NEF today and asked about the Hornet, they said they were only dropping the 20 " barrel, but would still sell the 22" barrel.  Also said they will only fit a 357 mag. barrel to a rifle frame and not a shotgun frame.  Not what I thought as I read here they are selling the new ones mounted to the SB-1 frame.  Also asked about sending a barrel back they mounted over 3 years ago that pops open with factory ammo.  The locking shelf looks like a file was sued on one side to fit it.  Said to send it back and they would take care of it.  Sounds like great customer service to me.  Just a side note, have 10 frames and 13 barrels so far.  Still thinking of others.  Almost to many to choose from.  Guess I'll have to get them all!

Sent my frame in yesterday for a hornet barrel and trigger work. Talked to customer service and they said they had a bunch of hornet barrels in stock. Can't wait to get it back.

Get em while ya can, just because they discontinued it doesn't mean they're out, but they aren't making any more of em unless they change their mind on it, which is always possible.

Seems like the 22" barrel is the obvious choice to make the best of various Hornet loadings..

Just an update, the 22 Hornet is alive and well at H&R, although for 2009 it will have a 1:9" twist barrel instead of their standard 1:12", dunno if that's good or bad, but that's what it will be, same as the .223, new 1:9" barrels are scheduled for production in April.

Guys, refresh this old guy's memory.  They dropped the .35 Whelen, the 7.62x39, and was it 7x57??? what else????  The CRS is at it again.  I hope they dont drop the Hornet.  I don't own one, don't want one, but others do.  I'd like them to bring back the ones they discontinued.  There were 6mms too, yes or no.  All they have to do is drop the .45-70 and we'll have to pull a raid on Ilion, NY.

Pete, the 7.62x39 was dropped due to too many owners trying to use milsurp ammo in them which caused misfires, if they had used SAAMI spec'd ammo in them, they wouldn't have complained to H&R about the problems and H&R would likely still be making them. The Whelen was first introduced as the limited production 26" RMEF model for one year I believe, 1996. It was later introduced as a 22" Handi which had headspace/ammo issues and was discontinued. The 7x57, 7x64, 270 and 30-06 Ultra Comps were only available for a short time and apparently never went into regular production probably due to lack of interest from distributors, the same reason the Handi-mags and 35 Remington never made it to production. The .444 and 450 Marlin Ultras were a couple other limited production models, only the 450 Marlin survived as an accessory barrel until the .444 Handi was reintroduced as a Handi. Same for the 357mag, it was available as a rifle, then only as an accessory barrel for a few years until late 2007 when a few SB2s were made, and in 2008 the SB1 came out. There may be others that have slipped my mind  ::), but I'll leave them to those that can remember them!! ;D

The 1-9" twist makes sense from their point. The 223 is produced
in a 1-9" twist and 22" long. So the Hornet will not suffer all that badly with a 1-9" twist. All they have to do is switch chamber reamers.

Many of the European gun makers have quit the Hornet for the more efficient 223. Now with the 17HMR who need a Hornet?

I agree with you Fred as far as cost effect is concerned. I personally wish they had chosen to go with 1-12" in the 22 Hornet and 223. I would buy a 1-12" twist NEF 223 immediately. I haven't been able to find one locally yet. I think most rifle makers use 1-12" in their 223 except NEF and Savage. I love the hunt, not much of a target shooter. I like the small grain bullets for varmint and coyote hunting since I started to reload. One hole in and seldom a hole going out = fur friendlier. Lots of destruction in between = DRT. JMO
