Being Shipped - Group Buy for 38-55 Ideal 375166 BPCR Mold
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:48:27 AM »
Shooting black powder using a 38-55 with a 1:18 twist … the old Ideal 375166 calculates to 17.65 twist factor. Who’s interested in a group buy for this old Ideal mold?

Background:
Don Miller did an excellent article for the Spring 2007 issue of the Black Powder Cartridge news entitled … A New Twist Rule Applied to Black Powder Rifles. In his very extensive calculation, he determined that the Ideal 375166 bullet has the best ballistics characteristics in a BPCR with a 1:18 twist

I contacted Lou Sellman, a Lyman mold distributor and asked him if he would contact Lyman Products to make a Special Run of the Ideal 375166 mold. He agreed to do it if there was a minimum order of 25 ... see the group buy poll and vote

Last year, Lou did a special run with Lyman for the old Ideal 457192 (45-70 and 45-75 caliber) mold.  The cost was $65 plus shipping.  Currently is working another special run for the Ideal 462560 mold

If you are interested purchasing the Ideal 457192 mold, he has a few left from the special run that Lyman made last year for a bunch of us

Back Up ... For Lou to have Lyman make the mold, he needs 35 orders.  Lyman threw him a curve - they now want $1600 for 2 cherries

I have the group buy posted on several forums.  There are now 31 individuals that want the mold with many Maybe's.  If some of the Maybe's changed to to Yes (ya know, a nice Christmas present to yourself) ... it would be a GO!

Depends on how old your 38-55 is, those made in 2007 will shoot .379" jacketed bullets good, I use Boer Bullets' 220gr JSP, those made before Marlin started making the barrels in 2007 will only shoot cast bullets .380" or bigger.  ;)

rsl ... With a 'Before Marlin, vintage 2003' ... here's what a Lyman 379674 lead bullet will do ... http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,150245.msg1098634449.html#msg1098634449
With the old Ideal 357166 group buy that calculates to 17.65 ratio in a 1:18 barrel - I have positive convictions that my groups will tighten up substantially out to 500 yards

I didn't see it and the web site link is down. I am not fermilular with this mold.

What is the weight and the "as cast" diameter?
