45-70 SS Ultra Hunter brings one home!!
« on: November 10, 2008, 05:18:24 PM »
This Saturday morning 11/08/2008 at 7:51 AM Central time, my 45-70 SS Ultra Hunter and Hornady's LEVERevolution 325 gr, did the job again!  A Louisiana 7 Pointer with an 18 inch inner and 21 inch outer spread, weighing in at 205 pounds.    Came out at about 150 yards, Quartering away from me, was shot behind the right shoulder with bullet exiting left front chest, only ran 75 yards!

Love my 45-70 SS Ultra Hunter!

I was thinking about using the same ammo for the Wisconsin whitetail opener in 11 days.

Aside from the 75yard run, what did the bullet do?  Complete passthrough?  Did you find any copper fragments left behind?  Did it turn the exit side shoulder into blood jello?

This is the 3rd deer, 3 shots 3 deer, I have been letting alot of deer walk, too small, Doe with baby, let it get bigger if it has good genetics etc.  This was the biggest, and it ran the farthest, the other 2 dropped in place.  As a matter of fact I thought I had missed it because it didn't drop in place, I was really talking to myself about how did you miss.  I saw it buck then it ran off, I heard it make a noise about 75 yards off in the woods but I wasn't sure it had crashed, I was hunting a thicket .  I continued to hunting for the next hour, my partner came over and went in to look , he came out and said he couldn't find any blood, I was really talking to myself now.  I got down and went to where I thought he had come out and found a big hoof print in a fire ant hill and then 1 drop of blood, then a few more, then lots more blood, then it was on the trees, ground, and then I saw him!!  Each deer has had massive shock damage, this deer the bullet went all the way through entering behind the right shoulder and  exiting the left front chest (he was quartering away from me).  I found the copper jacket lying just under the hyde at the exit hole.  It seems to me that most of the shock damage is on the entry side.  So far there hasn't been much damage to the meat either.  On this deer the inside of the right shoulder had the most blood gel.

My hunting partner and I drug it back up to where the Teryx was ( could have driven the Teryx to it but didn't want to mess up the woods anymore than we had too) and winched it onto the front Rack.  The next day we both were crippled.  I guess that goes along with being 2 old farts, he's still crippled and he's 2 years younger than me!!   ;D

Congrats on the deer.  Always nice to have some government mutton in the freezer.

We did well on deer this year.  All taken around the wheat fields so they were nice and fat but nothing like your animal.  Our deer are the little blacktails with a bit of mule deer mixed in.  Horns are usually quite small as the soil lacks whatever it is that's needed to make the bigger horns.  Two of the animals were taken with my 45-70 BC shooting cast bullets and both of them were hit thru the lungs.  They each traveled about fifty yards.  Two others were shot with my old Sharps 50-70 and the results were about the same.  The others were taken with a Model 94 Winchester 25-35 and a Model 95 30-40.

Big problem now is having my son and his wife wanting to take to BC out shooting all the time.  Terrible problem.  Having kids that enjoy the same things you do.  They do a good job of keeping the ammo supply loaded up which I like a lot.

We were able to drive a pickup to within 20 feet of all the deer so the recovery process was easy.  Had the cooling room really full for a couple of weeks.
