JOB SITUATIONS??
« on: November 17, 2008, 12:31:01 PM »
Even though sales and profits are up my hours have been cut for 5 straight weeks, go figger. How are the job situations accross the nation??? Layoffs, closings, etc. Seems that some companies are using the situation with the economy to take advantage of workers. POWDERMAN.  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Jobs are scarce here in upstate NY.
Alot of downsizing... layoffs... business closings... etc.
I have been laid off for almost 4 weeks now and I'm having no luck with the job search yet.
I'm not one to sit on my butt so I will find something... hopefully sooner than later!!

I was laid off back in March.  I decided to start my own business in April.  It was tough at first, but things are picking up.  We still have a roof over our heads and the lights are still on.  Thank God!

I have been real slow with work for months now. My wife and daughter ran into my old boss ( I worked for him for almost 10 years ) at the grocery store yesterday and he asked if I was working. She told him things have been slow for me and I was finishing some drywall for a friend but that it was about done. He said for me to give him a call that he has a lot of inside work. I called him yesterday and he said he would call me tonight about maybe starting back with him on Tuesday. Wish me luck. Dale

There are some jobs at Agco in Jackson MN and Toro in Windom MN. Alot are being scarfed up by others that have been laid off. Also Butterfield foods is always hiring out of Butterfield MN. Qute a few ethanol plants hiring in Southern MN too. Not all jobs are listed on the internet, give these places a call they'll tell ya whats up.

Our deer season opens the Monday after Thanksgiving. No I do not still have that 243. It killed me to have to sell it when things got tough. The person that bought it sure got a shooter. Thanks for the invite maybe next year. Dale

i was told thursday that my position was eliminated.  i am union so i have bumping rights, and plenty of guys under me, but it still is stressful trying to figure it all out.   knowing my choice will adversely affect others doesnt sit lightly; but it beats being unemployed by a longshot.

Boy you guys would not even believe the day I had today. If it weren't for bad luck I would have none. I was supposed to meet my new but old boss at the Sheetz gas station on Rt 119 this morning at 7:45. I showed up there at 7:25 because I did not want to miss his or have him waiting on me. I waited till 8:30 there before I headed home to give him a call at home to see if I could get his cell number. We go a couple inches of snow last night and pulled into my yard that was covered. I was pulling into the place I always park that is on a down hill grade. I put the brakes on and I was not stopping at all. I slid about 20 feet and stopped 2 feet before I took out the swimming pool. I tried to back up the first time and just spun my tires. I rocked it a few times and got going enough to back completely out to the driveway. I tore the yard up good though. I get inside the house and the phone rings. It is my boss. He wanted to know where I was I told him I was at the Sheetz at 119 and 982 and he said he was at the one down the 7 miles. He said he was headed to Lowes and would call me when he left and would meet me at the Sheetz I was at earlier. He called me about 45 minutes later and said he was on his way. I go out to the van and notice the tread on my tire is separated from the tire. I did not have his cell number to call him and tell him so I just hoped I would make it to the gas station I was supposed to meet him at. He showed up and I showed him my tire. I told him I could not drive to the job with the way my tire was. I told him I put my last $10.00 in gas to get here and did not have the money to replace the tire. He lent me $100.00 to get it fixed and I am to meet him at the same station in the morning. Anyways I go to the nearest tire place to get a new tire and they tell me it will be about an hour wait before they can get me in the bay. Just because we got a little snow last night for the first time everyone and their brother was trying to get winter tires put on. It was 2 1/2 hours before I got into a bay. After that I was on my way in 20 minutes. I sure hope tomorrow goes better. Dale

Dale - If it wasn't for bad luck you would have no luck at all. :o It can only go up from here buddy.

There are lots of people unemployed in my area (NE Indiana) There are a lot of automotive or automotive related jobs here and that industry is not doing well. Where I work, we are getting slow too. We a supply the big three with service parts. Mostly brake drums, rotors brake pads tie rod ends, etc. There is talk of a 3 week shut down at Christmas. We have some orders, but our suppliers are shutting down so I do not know if we can keep going with any parts coming in. I have 3 guys on my maintenance crew. I have been told to start thinking about which one I can lay off. All three guys do a very good job, so it will not be easy deciding which one will get it. I hope I do not have to make that decision. We have two shifts and they are thinking about cutting back to one shift, lay a few off and combine the ones left. It is all up in the air right now. We are going from week to week, not sure if we can get parts in or if the orders from GM, Ford and Chrysler are going to dry up. On the plus side we are repair parts and that is one place the big three can make a little money at, so they still want parts, if they do not run out of money so they can not buy any. Our particular building is making money, but the rest of the company is not doing so well, not sure how that will all shake down either before this is over. We have had to tighten our belt, no more spending until after the first of the year and there has been a hiring freeze on since Sept. even though we could have used people then, not now. It is just all up in the air, it makes every one nervous.
Great men have vision and resolve to make dreams come true.

I'm from Michigan.  A lot of the jobs have already dried up here due to businesses not wanting to pay the high State taxes/regulations so they are all ready gone. The businesses that are left are now preparing to not pay the federal tax increases that were promised to be given them,  lots of warning letters going out to employees everywhere both housrly and salary.  Now we are preparing to by a GM car too....cept it won't be in our driveway...but we'll buy one anyways.

I think if we just payed more taxes things would get better......LOL!!!!!!!

Keep your chun up,  and have a sense of humor,  humor is the only way to get through the madness.

I was laid off back in February, started my current job the next Monday.  Current job has been getting slow.... all the overtime has dried up, and I've been doing lots of reorganizing shelves and pushing brooms instead of working on jobs, it's got me pretty spooked, especially since I'm low man on the totem pole.  My old boss from a previous job told me that if I ever needed a job the door was always open.... I hope I don't have to find out.

We're still drilling but are not building any new rigs at the moment. The oilfield building usually slows down around this time of year. A really cold winter will help a lot we drill gas not oil. Every rig we have that will pull the dragon from the ground is out there twisting.
We laid off 21 welder and 6 yard hands last month. We are still looking for 2 more mechanics. We have been working 80-120 hrs a week. I've been on OT since 3:00 Tuesday. And most likely I get a call in the next hour or so.

I hope things get going for everyone I'll keep y'all in my prayers.

Overall, the job picture in my area is going steady, but there are segments of employment that really fell apart.  Home building and auto jobbers are the worst hit.

The problem is that it is like water circling a drain, with more and more segments getting caught in the whirlpool.  Soon everyone will be caught up in it.

If we don't get real leadership out of Washington D.C., the last Great Depression will look like a Cake Walk.

Time is running out quickly for somebody to do something.   The time table is now down to weeks.

Dale,

If you want to go Deer Hunting and you have enough gas to get here and back, you are welcome.  I can outfit you with a rifle for a day.

I don't know exactly what part of the state you are from, but anywhere in Pa is usually not more than a 4 hr drive on the Interstates from here.
