.45-70 Hundred Yard Rifle....Humbug!!
« on: November 29, 2008, 07:56:43 AM »
The Handi .45-70 finally spoke this morning about 9:30.  Thought it was a yearling doe, but it turned out to be a spike.  220 yards with the Hornady Leverevolution.  I aimed too high and spined him.  Dumped him right there though.  The Hornadys shoot very flat.  Now, I'm grabbing a sandwhich and going back to cutting venison so I can hunt again this evening.  Patty has chicken for tonight so we'll have tenderloin for breakfast and backstrap for dinner tomorrow.

Don't sell your Handi .45-70 short.  It will do whatever you can do.

Pete

Been there done that too many times. lots O'work, I've been taking it to Mayer's or Tommy's for several years ..... when and if I ever kill something!!! ::) I hauled in 1144lbs of elk and deer from camp on one trip one year, a good year for sure, but I would have hated to cut that up myself!! :o 8)

I here that. I have already cut up 2 and I am taking the next one to the butcher. Taking the boys this afternoon to let the Handi 243 bark again.

Tim,
I don't know what load you were using in that side lock, but it blowed the whole deer away!  Back off bro, and leave a little meat!

That was an afterthought pic, when I got back to camp with the animal, Dad was ready to head to town for restocking camp supplies and a bath which he did once a week, so he hauled the deer off to the butcher rather than us making a special trip to town 110 miles away. Didn't take the pic until he brought the head back for burial.

Sorry for the hijack Pete, got carried away when flinter was mentioned!! ::) :-[

I've had time to dress out and butcher the deer and reflect on the day.  I'm tired.  It was the best long shot on a deer I've ever made.  It was offhand at 220 yards, and I over-judged drop and held too high.  It is almost like the Handi knew what to do and dumped him.

The Leverevolution really works in this rifle.   Try it, You'll like it.

Good night, a very tired and sleepy Pete

Tim, You are very, very special.  I never knew you were a side hammer guy.  I love it and it is a very rewarding thing to do.  I'm taking images of buckey and going to bed......I'm whipped, whumped, trampled, whatever.  NIGHT ALL.  Pete

Fun Aint It Pete. The  first  one I took with my .45-70 was offhand @150yards+ I thought it would drop alot so I held high, took three vertibre out of his back just behind the shoulder, A 23 inch inside spead 8 point, He has a place of honor on my wall now. I hit where I aimed. The ole gov is not limited to close range. 8)

I have never really thought of the 45-70 as a deer cartridge here in Texas but may have to try it this season.
