.243 drew blood this morning. WARNING - graphic pics.
« on: December 20, 2008, 06:53:25 AM »
Well it's been a long affair with a lot of "jumping through hoops" but I purchased my first Tikka right before Thanksgiving, a T3 Lite .243, anyone who's been watching this board is familiar with this. This weekend and next is our holiday antlerless hunt here in Okla. Went out this morning to the same place where I downed a doe and then the buck of a lifetime during rifle season a couple of weeks ago. Had poured out corn in the snow on Tuesday, this morning it was 51 degrees before sunup. At first legal light, I took this nice 94 lb. doe with a neck shot from the T3 Lite. 243. I was using Federal Fusion 95 gr. ammo. She was the third deer I had seen. I had to take a head on neck shot while she had her head up, every time she ducked her head it was behind a limb between me and her. Bullet entered thru the neck, traveled the length of her body and exited just above the hams about center of the back. Pics are from my cell phone which usually takes pretty good pics unless in low light conditions which is what I had to deal with this morning. You can get the general idea though.

Federal Fusion 95 grain. First animal I've killed with the .243 Fusion, I've had great results with the .308.

Fusion ammo has been good to me.  I use the 140 grn in the 7mm-08 and have had 2 shots and 2 bang flops with it.  One was a 225lb dressed 150 class buck at 250 yards straight on chest shot, the other was a 120 lb dressed doe at 100 yards broad side shot.  Both deer never took another step and were dead when they hit the ground not even doing so much as leg kick.

I wonder what the actual bullet is that they are using? Nosler?

Dang! Where you located at bro, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio? Must be big deer country for sure. I took a buck on the Thursday after Thanksgiving that was a giant for my part of the country.

I'd like the chance to get one of the real monsters though, say a 190 class 250 pounder, ok, just dreaming a bit. But really, deer here in my part of Okla. run 90-120 average and both does I've taken this year each weighed in at 94 lbs. field dressed. I've taken three deer from the same spot in three times out, I'll take those results over the long trip - high cost - dream buck any day I guess. My spot is so close that I can leave my house and be sitting and ready to shoot in 15 minutes total.
Not sure who the manufacturer is for the Fusion bullet but it is definitely a great terminal performance projectile. I believe Federal even may be producing it, not sure, but it actually performs like a Ballistic Tip almost. The first doe this year was with the .308 Fusion. Hit her directly in front  of the right shoulder and it exited right behind her left knee. She rolled, got up, and stumbled about 10 yards and laid down, end of story. The pictures of her would have looked something like these did, blood everywhere, awesome exit wound and bleed-out. The front half of her heart was gone, not mush, but gone!  The buck you can read about, but it was a classic, may have had more terminal results with that bullet had his neck not been swelled up as big as a monster truck tire, and had he not been so heavy, who knows? I'm definitely a fan of the Fusion ammo now though. I look at it as a first choice for factory ammo now in all the calibers I'm shooting.

Like2hunt,

I hunt in northern MN and WI.  The deer definitely are physically bigger up here.  Most yearling fork bucks will average 100 lbs dressed in my area.  My largest bodied white tail to date was in 2004 when I shot a 9 pointer that scored 140 and weighed 244 lbs field dressed at the butcher shop.  The largest white tail I have seen up here in person was a 12 pointer about 10 years ago that weighed in at 275 lbs dressed.  I did not shoot it, but I had seen it live and missed it.  It was shot by a neighboring hunting party.  Quite a buck as he had 10 inch drop tines and hanging on the meat pole next to a decent 8 pointer he made that 8 pointer look like a fawn.

The largest doe I have taken up here was about 10 years ago and it weighed 175 lbs dressed.  I actually thought it was a buck when I shot it.  That is uncommonly big for the area but can happen.  The average adult doe will be 120-150 lbs.

Another Tikka in 243. No great deer but considering the drag back to the truck, big enough. Handloaded Sierra 85gr through the boiler room at 60 yards and she dropped like a stone.

SUHWEET! They all count my friend. Looks like she might have been quartering to ya a bit. Am I right? Can't beat those Quake Claw slings either. What scope ya got there?
I'm going back out this weekend I believe, and will probably see how mine does on a heart lung shot if I can get one to broadside me. They've had the tendency to want to look right towards me lately.

Good to see those fusions working good for ya. I shot an elk a few years back with a 180 fusion from my 30-06 and it worked great. Perfect mushroom and weight retention.
