What's the worst recoiling gun you've ever shot?
« on: February 08, 2009, 02:07:22 PM »
Just wondering...got dared to shoot my 45-120 without the recoil reducer and with the metal butt plate in combination with some 500 grain bullet scooting out somewhere near 2300 fps.  I can definitively say that the Kick-Eez works better than the metal butt plate.

Next best was one of those little Topper turkey guns with a 3 1/2" load.

Beyond that...I shot a 50 BMG without a brake but it was really heavy so it wasn't that bad.  My 45-70 is pretty light, it can knock some sense into you if you aren't ready for the hot loads.

My Daisy Red Ryder ;D  Very seriously, I don't want to ever flinch.  It destroys accuracy for whatever you shoot.  If you start flinching, you'll do it with a .22 as well a a big bore.  You'll all laugh, but my worst one was an Ithaca 37 in 16 ga.  I shot doves and quail with it down south, and most shots were snap shots and a lot of times the gun was off shoulder and left green and blue marks on my body.  And, another surprise is my .30-30 Marlin 336T.  I'd rather shoot my Handi .45-70 any day of the week.  The straight grip, narrow stock, and no recoil pad kill me with 170 gr. bullets.  I know, I'm just an old whimp ;)

I have shot some "big" guns and recoil usually doesn't bother me. However one gun I cannot shoot comfortably is an old 16 gauge O/U I have that I truly enjoy carrying in the woods and fields. The problem is with the angle of the stock which seems to increase the felt recoil, but not just to my shoulder, I end up with a sore cheekbone after only a couple of shots, and it ends up bruised, tender. and discolored the next day. And I do not buise easliy or often....<><....:(

OH YES!  Speaking of getting pounded in the cheek, I thought I wanted a Benelli Supersport II.  A guy came to work and let me try it.  That thing hit me in the cheek so hard it made me take a couple steps back.  I thought I did something wrong and shot an entire box of shells trying to figure it out.  I looked like a chipmunk on one side of my face!  Do not know what it was, but that gun did not work for me.

I can agree with that 100%.   My Topper with its 12 g turkey barrel weighs less than 6 lbs.    I shot it twice with the plain butt with 2 oz Winchester 3 1/2" turkey loads.  Thought I had dislocated my shoulder.   Put a Pachmyer pad on it after that and it is still a most cruel punisher.

I do love turkey season though.  I usually win bets with newbies at the camp.   I tell them I will pay them to pattern my shotgun for 10 rounds.....I never have had to pay and we all get a good laugh  ;D at the testosterone laden young fella that try to prove something to the old timers.  :D

I would have to say most of my milsurps (8mm Mauser, Mosin-Nagant M44 & 91/30,
& my Schmidt-Rubin K31 in 7.5X55 Swiss) have hurt my shoulder the most until I
started wearing my Past Recoil Shield. Without the Past Recoil Shield those steel
butt plates are real punishing! :o

Two come imeadiately to mind.. a 378Weatherby mag in a Ruger #1 and a Weatherby MKV in 460Weatherby mag.

 Makes my 3 1/2 12ga Goose/Turkey loads seem like a 243.

What's the worst recoiling gun you've ever shot?

155mm Self-propelled Howitzer.  Whole front end picks up off the ground, tube recoils between 36 and 42" (best NOT be standing behind it in the cab).

It's also the MOST FUN gun I've ever shot!

My little bro's .270 is kinda rough on the unprotected shoulder.  Savage 110 synthetic with a scope that seems like its an inch from your eye.  I'm sure if he had a better scope and a nice recoil pad on it I would never notice it, but that short eye-relief on that scope messes w/ your mind...

I would rather shoot my Pardner 12 gauge 3" w/ turkey loads any day of the week over that savage... I guess maybe Its in my head b/c a lot of my friends wont touch that 12 ga of mine lol...

I agree about the surplus rifles.  I think it is the design of the stocks and the lack of any kind of recoil pad. I once bought an Enfield rifle in 303.  I got 300 rounds of surplus ammo with it.  I took it to the range one time.  I shot about 10-12 painful rounds through it.  It just never felt right on my shoulder, and hurt more with each shot.  When I got home and took off my shirt, I was bruised and purple from the middle of my chest to my elbow.  I couldn't sell that rifle and ammo fast enough.

CW, was that 460 braked?  They say the 378 Weatherby has one of the sharpest recoils of any cartridge.

Greetings from the Great State of Georgia !

Recoil huh ? Well the most recoil I have ever experienced is still what I use to judge the other guns recoil. The good old H&R sigle shot 10 GA with full bore magnum buckshot. MAN does this gun kick. It at times seems as if it will jump up and leave you upon the hammer falling.  But.........If you CAN gently squeeze the 10lb trigger it will obliterate anything in front of it. I have flipped coyotes a complete off the ground back flip at 50 yards. I do not like the recoil, but to have that kind of effective results, I will take it. NO PLINKING with it though. God bless you all.

Back when I was a kid, my best buddy's grandfather passed away and left him a couple of guns. Two of which were SxS shotguns, one a 10 ga, and the other an 8 ga. That's right an 8 ga. Well, we being boys and all, we just had to shoot them. Along with the guns were a couple of boxes of brass shell shotgun shells. We decided to take them out in the desert and try them out. My buddy took the 10 ga, and that left me with the 8 ga. These were both exposed hammer guns. He wanted me to go first, so naturally, I loaded both barrels, and cocked both hammers, aimed the gun at a mid sized barrel cactus about 40 yards away, and...

When I pulled the front trigger, the gun "doubled", firing both barrels. The description of being struck by lightning applies good enough. At first, I didn't know what happened, my vision greyed out, and I thought for sure my collar bone was broken. I managed to not drop the gun, which I considered a victory. I was standing there, kind of hunched over, trying to remember where I was, and I got the sensation that it was raining. The ground all the way around us was wet (this was mid-summer desert outside of phoenix-no rain for months). The barrel cactus was almost completely gone, and it was raining pieces of cactus all around.

I managed to look up over at my buddy, and all I could say was, "Your turn!" and hand him the gun.

It never occurred to us to test them first, to see if they were safe to shoot. That was almost 30 years ago, and to this day I don't think either one of those guns has ever been shot again!

Good times.

I have a Win mod70 Featherweight XTR 30-06 that absolutely is not fun to shoot.  I shoot 180's. Extremely accurate, yet extremely unpleasant.  Anything after the 3rd isn't fun and after 5 is just painful.  I shot 10 in a row last summer and payed for 5 days.

I used to have a Savage Safari Express in 458 Mag.  It had a brake, but still rough.  My 10 guage handi hits the cheek pretty hard.

But the hardest recoiling (most painful) firearm I ever fired was the M-203 grenade launcher when fired from the prone position.  When firing it from the prone position, at long range and thus requiring high elevation, the corner of the M-16 stock was the only part that contacted my shoulder.  That combined with the fact that I was skin and bones then made it a very painful affair.

Yea Kevin, milsurps can be a bear! The steel butt plates were designed to be used as a
weapon in themselves. If you take a 9-10 lb rifle and that steel butt plate and hit
someone in the melon with it they are through! That's all well and good, but it makes
for some painful shooting for a guy over 40! Fortunately that Past Recoil Shield works
great. I can fire over 400 rounds in a morning when I'm wearing it and not feel a thing
afterwords!

As much as I hate to say it, my beloved 338/06 is the most uncomfortable rifle to shoot that I have.   :-[  I'm sure it's strictly stock design though.  Punch you in the shoulder and then the cheek.   :'(
