700gr in the 500 S&W
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:09:03 AM »
A good friend was kind enough to let me borrow his custom Mountain Mold 700gr bullet mold.  First off the mold is amazing to cast with once up to temp even with this HUGE bullet I have about zero rejects.  After cutting the spur and opening the bullets fall right out, I have never used a Mountain Mold before and can see a few in my future.  I sized them to .501" and pan lubed with a homemade random lube.  To let you get the idea of how big this bullet is that is a 22lr on the left and a .452 300gr bullet on the right.

The load was 29gr of Lil' Gun, Winchester Large rifle primers, in Starline brass.  No idea what the actual velocity was but according to Quick it should be just shy of 1500fps.

Ok on to the shooting.  To say the recoil was harsh would be an understatement.  I shot 10 rounds off hand and dont think I will be shooting anymore today.  All the shooting was done off hand at 25 yards. I fired 2 3 round groups and shot steel plates with the remaining rounds.

First group

The 3rd round of the first group actually took the dot off the cardboard so I pasted it on different part of the cardboard box I had set up in front of the target butt.
Group number 2

Sounds like you're all ready for those rampaging behemoths!! :o Good choice on the load, that got me a 2" 100yd group at 1430fps with the Ranger Rick bullet which is .502".  29.5gr was a little faster at 1450fps, but accuracy wasn't as good, 30gr was even worse.  :-\

Nice pics!! ;)

Any idea what a max load would be for this?  29gr is more than enough for me but I am wondering how high I can actually go with Lil'Gun, because I am going to try it  ;D

30gr was max listed on the KDM Customs website before they went out of business their data was worked up in an Encore pistol.

That's good shooting!  You should do some penetration tests with the beast and see if it offers much of an improvement over lighter cast boolits.

..Good Grief! I love the grouping your getting with that monster bullet. Have you tried other lighter heavy weight bullets? I was hoping to try loadings based on Sectional Density groups to see what was possible. I was going to start at 400gr/.228 as a baseline, then Graduate to a 440/.250, 470/.263, 530/.303 then a 575/.328 for the heavy hitter. I also wanted to fiddle with the a 635 grain .510 Creedmoor Hollow base swaged to .502 . That should keep me busy for a while........

Yea it seems to like the "lighter" bullets also.

Currently a friend and I are trying to find somewhere to go to hog hunt on spring break.  My brother is down in Jacksonville, Florida so we were thinkin maybe down that way, we still havent confirmed there are hogs down there though.  If we go we are taking the 500.

A buddy of mine is coming over this afternoon to shoot his WSM Ill see if I can get him to shoot a 700gr bullet.  Maybe I can ge a pic/video of the recoil.

....You should have luck down there in the areas around Jacksonville. I live just to the north in South Georgia and they are all over around here. The trick is to find a farmer with a hog problem. Hogzilla was shot about 45 miles from here. Some nice porkers of 400-500lbs. can be had off some of these farms. Every blue moon I find one rooting the oaks on our uplands off the Satilla River. But ours are usually a lot smaller here.....

Per Tylers suggestion I did a penetration test with the 700gr and the 450gr bullets.  The test was conducted with 2 700gr a 1 450gr bullet shot into a WET cottonwood log, after I shot it I split the log to find the bullets.

700gr number 1.

700gr number 2

450gr

For all practical purpose they penatrated the same, the 450 went in about a half of an inch further.  BUT those 700gr made the log move alot more after being hit and the 700gr nose deformed alot more.

Pic of all the lead dug out of the log.

Is it possible they aren't stabilized as much?  I shot 720 grain bullets out of my 45-120 and they went almost through a pretty large log even though they looked to be keyholing.  Maybe a harder alloy is in order?

Thats some good tough cast.

Why you guys do this to me is wrong . I bought the 500SW 1 cause it was a great deal and came with dies and brass and 2 I promised my self that I would keep loads light so I would not loosen the frame now you post this crap it just ain't fair puttin this stuff out there to contemplate ::). Liking slug guns and seeing chunks of lead like these makes it very hard on a guy. If nothin else I can at least pull back on the thumper 45Colt load and move to this. Kurt
