.357 chambers and throats
« on: March 26, 2009, 03:11:47 AM »
I'm considering a .357 barrel for my Handi but I have a couple questions.Awhile ago I looked at and older Handi .357 and the chamber looked really wierd. It seemed to have a very long throat and looked nothing like a .357 Marlin M-94 chamber. It hadn't been Max'd.It seemed to me to look like they used a revolver type chambering/ throating reamer. Are the new Handi .357's like this as well or are they more conventionally chambered? At this time I'm not really interested in a Max, so a long chamber / throat bothers me. Thanks

Yup, they're long throated, tons of posts on it, some can almost chamber Max ammo without reaming, I wouldn't be surprised if some can!! Many shoot Dan Wesson 360 ammo in theirs or cut down Max ammo without touching the chamber with a reamer.

How are you going to load those long 35 Remington bullets without a long throat?   ???

I have two of the older longer chambered .357 and they both shoot very well I also have a newer .357 barrell 2008 made It shoot well also.  I wouldn't be overly concerend with it Get one if you don't like the way it shoots ream it to max or .35 rem. If you don't what to do that someone will buy it off you and that is without any doubts on my part.  I really enjoy shooting my .357 handies. 8)

Any ideas why they chose that particular configuration?

None reliably...  ;D
The Lil mag case just doesn't have the HP to get the bigger bullets moving....  In the MAXI, the 200 Rn's work OK, but the mag is just a bit too slow unless major bones are hit.
