Extra barrel storage
« on: June 03, 2009, 06:56:51 AM »
This is probably a stupid question, but how do you folks store your extra Handi barrels when off the frame? Especially with scopes attached?  They are too short to catch the rifle loops if stood up in the safe.

We are remodeling our house, and we are planing on a built in gun cabinet with drawers for extra barrels and pistols.  Just an idea. but for right now they are standing in the corner of the small cabinet we have.

The old-timers on here will no doubt tell you "just store them on another receiver and stock....". I'm in the same boat as you and like one rifle that shoots several calibers. Mine are standing in a corner of the safe.

I use metal security cabinets for gun storage - and I use a magnetic barrel holder to hold the of frame barrels.  This lets me adjust the height to match the barrels.  Works great.

I built a shelf in the bottom of my safe to raise them up to fit in the barrel notches.  the area under the shelf is handy for all sorts of stuff.

I only have one extra barrel right now, it's on a couple sheet rock screws covered with vinyl tubing on the wall, the other 46 barrels are stored on their respective frames as Wes mentioned.  ;D

Takedown shotgun storage case.  Looks like a stretched aluminum brief case.  Watched the sales going on & got it cheap.  Get one that is not "fitted" for a shotgun.

Much shorter than a full length rifle case, so it's much more portable.  I can get the 3 spare barrels in it with scopes mounted (and each has it's own forearm), or leave the ML barrel at home & take the handi in the case w/2 spare barrels (broken down).  Even have room for some ammo.

I got tired of barrels with their scopes clattering about, so I just put them on their own dedicated frame and stock.  Much easier, and a lot of the accuracy variables are gone.

good idea, the rafters....i built fishing rods for many years....they were all over the place. I built rod racks attached to the ceiling so i could store em like you have your guns, only hanging below and parallel to the ceiling....worked excellent

Old jeans make great barrel store-ers.  Just cut the legs off and you have two custom fit holders.  You could oil or silicone treat the jeans material, wrap a barrel in one leg and store the wrapped barrels in empty rifle cases, on closet shelves, in rafters, or keep em wrapped up and just lean em against the walls of the safe.  Once wrapped, they won't ding or dent anything.

Big tool box under the work bench. People are not likely to steal barrels with out the rest of the gun attached.

Agree, but there are a lot more people inclined to steal tools then gun barrels too.  You're toolbox might disappear a lot quicker than your gun safe.

I have a couple barrels that don't see much use anymore.  I lube them up very well and use a vacuum seal machine to seal them in a bag.  If you cut the bag long, then you can cut it open and reseal a few times before you need a new bag. Then they get stored in the safe.  I am a bit leary to vacuum seal a scope though.  I really don't know if the stuffing would get sucked out, sometimes scopes are filled with a gas like nitrogen.

That's one reason I no longer get extra barrels.  Plus had someone break in a few years back and steal the only thing not in the vault, a 30-06 barrel with Shepard Scope.  Doubt they had much use for the barrel, just wanted the scope.
