I just put the same rear sight on my .357 tonight. I know that front sight is too low. Come on fellows, what are you using for a front?

Here's one way from the FAQs, works on the 45-70 and 44mag, the .357 barrel is smaller at ~.750" diameter, a 3/16" shorty ramp and a .450" tall bead should be close enough at .638".  ;)

I tested my .357 today with the peep rear and factory front. At 50 yards, with the rear sight as low as possible, I hit dead center with a very heavy loaded 158 grain .38 Special. Switched to .357 with 180 gr. R-P bullets over a max load of H-110 and it too was centered.

By my best measurement standards, it shows .505".

I called H+R today and they tell me they have three front sights for Handi's available, the tallest being .634 which should work perfect on the 357 barrel with the wgrs peep....by perfect i mean dead on elevation at 100 yds with the peep in the middle of it's adjustment range(so you could go up or down if needed....a shorter one would work but the aperature would probably be near or at the bottom of the adjustment...the sights are $10.95 each and a whopping 10 bucks to ship....probably costs them 3 bucks to drop it in a small padded envelope and ship ???

That's a better price than going with the Williams ramp and insert, I knew the October 2008 price, and also that their shipping is spendy, I ordered $18 worth of parts for Pete's extractor conversion and it cost over $30 with tax and shipping.  :-\

Tim

The tallest factory sight is .634", H&R sells it for $10.75 plus shpg. A Williams Firesight and shorty ramp will get you there tho and are bolt on. ;)

I too have the 357 (slick barrel) with the Williams WGRS rear peep.  I went to order the 0.634" (P/N R03872) front sight and he said all he had was the 0.578" (P/N R03873).

That's only 0.056" lower, but the Williams only adjusts (by my measurements) from lowest to highest about 0.1".

Am I okay to order the 0.578" front sight ramp?  (I don't mind paying the $10 for the part, but this will be the third $10 shipping charge in 3 weeks).  >:(

Thanks,
-Kyle

Use the formulas at Brownell's to calculate the sight height to see if that sight is high enough.

I did.  But by my calculations the Williams rear peep measures 1.17" and the front sight with the 0.634" (the one that is known to work) measures 1.094".  (A 0.076" difference).

best advice is go with the Williams ramp and the appropriate insert to get the right height, see the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs. You can just call Williams and they'll fix you up.

By my measurements the WGRS at its lowest setting is approx. 1.0" over the center of the bore.  You will need some elevation to get to 50 or 100 yards so a lower front sight (that 1.0" over center bore) is PROBABLY required.  If it was me I would go for the .578.
