lapping 22 rimfire
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:02:58 AM »
Hi Veral, I still have some of your lapping compound left over from umteen years ago that I had used for fire lapping a Ruger ss 44 mag blackhawk and I am curious as to whether I can use it to firelap  22 rimfire barrels ? If so do I just need to get either some standard velocity (or subsonic) ammo from our local wally world and use that ? I suppose that I would just roll bullet on compound on a glass plate or ? I have checked all the post and I am not 100 % sure what the entire process is to lap 22 rimfires so I would appreciate if you would describe it to me .Btw I have had wfn, lfn,and paper patched molds from you and can say they were all great as far as accuracy and performance, especially the paper patch(think it was a 300 gr) with pure lead bullet and 22 grains of 296 out of a 10 inch contender ! talk about turning a deer inside out ! Anyway thanks and looking forward to getting this info from you ,Craig

I've heard the CCI CB Longs work great.

Don't roll lap on 22 rimfire ammo.  Just smear it in the grooves then wipe all you can off by wiping lengthwise, from brass to point of bullet.  You can load them in the magizine.  I shoot 5 shot groups till accuracy quites improving.  Best ammo is CCI standard velocity long rifle, or CCI long rifle pistol match, because these are both the slowest long rifle rounds I know of.  CB longs or regular shorts, of any brand, are OK if you are having trouble finding ammo.  I just remembered the relitively new 60 grain ammo.  This would be perfect if you can lay hands on it.

Use the same ammo for 22 magnum, but don't expect accuracy, nor use shorts.  The cases will bulge a lot and possibly split, but pressure and velocity is extremely low because powder blows around the bullet in the long large chamber.  No matter, they do a good job of lapping, safely, and there has always been enough speed to get the bullets out of the barrel.

I could tell you many success stories about lapping rimfire rifles, auto pistols and revolvers.  All good, always a worthwile improvement in accuracy, and most times a DRAMATIC improvement,  I've never a bad report.   Here's a middle of the road one.  My colt huntsman shot 1  1/4 inch groups at 25 yards with any ammo I ever tried in it.   An old gun with many thousands of rounds through it, but shooting doesn't smooth a 22 RF.   After lapping, any high velocity ammo would print 10 shots on a 25 yard steel plate without increasing the splat size after the first shot.  This with a clamped on test scope and bench rest.

Maybe you need to hear another story.  A customer who had three expensive target rifles, two shot into a half inch at 100 yards, consistently, the other shot quite a bit tighter.  He lapped all three and cut groups in half on every one of them.  Ahuh.  1/4 and 1/8 inch at 100 yards.  I have no reason to doubt him, because if it would have hurt accuracy on those $1200 rifles, he would NOT have told be they shot better!

22 rimfires are the most rewarding guns to lap because it is so easy and ALWAYS improoves accuracy.

Hi,thanks guys and thanks Veral for the information. I have another question for you Veral concerning the lapping of a 22 rimfire . all the 22 rimfire rifles I have are dirty inthat they have been shot from 250 to thousands of rounds through them so I am wondering if I need to clean the bores down to bare metal before I start the lapping process ? Thanks,Craig

Veral, they need to be lead bullets (no copper jackets), right, to firelap with?

Absolutely no copper jacketed bullets for lapping, though some are or did offer lapping kits with charged jacketed bullets, or recommend using jacketed.

The reason for not using jacketed.  They rip the throat out with alarming speed, don't produce a fine finish down in the corners of the rifling lands, and do not produce a truely straight or choke  barrel.  Only lead, fired at very low velocity will do these essential things, which are the whole purpose of lapping.

If lapping a 22, the light copper plating on rimfire ammo is not a problem, but the lowest velocity ammo which I recommended above, has no plating.
