New SAMCC barrel
« on: October 30, 2009, 02:45:18 PM »
This is our first SAMCC off, soon to head west, to the No. 01 owner.  The second is in process and is almost complete.  This barrel will be offered to GBO members, as a Christmas Special.  Details to be announced.

Oooh!  Shiney!!! ;D

Very nice looking barrel.  I usually shoot larger ones, but I'd imagine it would sing pretty well when it's fired!

Thanks, Irishman Brooks USA for bringing this to life.

And again thanks to George for laboring through my "drawings" to produce something  workable for  Irishman to work with!!

Here is a picture of the original gun.

This gun was brought from Germany by one of the founders of the South African Miniature Cannon Club in Durban South Africa founded in the late 1960's. The gun was fired on a regular basis 30 years and was semi retired in the mid 90's.  It is now only fired by guests and visitors to the SAMCC.

Thanks again to Brooks USA for producing this gun!

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words.  It's kind of a tradition here on our board  to include a powder can in a cannon picture to give some real perspective.  Irishman does that pretty well with the pictures of the cannons he builds that he post on his website.

But this is one of those times when his picture only has about 750 words...

South African Miniature Cannon Club Cannon No. 1.

This is no little desk top cannon!

DD has discovered that no dimensions were put on the barrel drawings for the trunnions.  A note has been applied to the list of drawings on the original thread and it will be repeated below:

Trunnion diameter = .625"

Distance between ends of trunnions = 3.235"

A comparison of the original barrel and the drawings will show that the trunnions have been brought up to the barrel centerline vs the low mount of the original.

Center line trunnions on the barrel will cause the barrel to sit lower in the carriage as shown in the drawings.  A bit of modification may be required to compensate.  I can't locate copies of the drawings, so I can't be more specific.

George, Your prints are beautiful! First thing one does before making chips, is, sit down with the prints!  There isn't a diameter on the trunnion, but the proportion is perfect! I simply put a scale on the trunnion, bingo, it obviously was .625.

You are right, but the only thing that might be affected is the transom...and that is maybe.  Even then a few strokes with a round wood rasp will get the correct clearance.

I did a virtual assembly of barrel and truck (the whole thing, not just the wheels) and there are no clearance issues.  However, I did notice that the grooves for the trunnions on the cheeks were too small for the trunnions as drawn on the barrel, which were drawn larger than those on the original.  So be forewarned that there is at least one discrepancy in the drawings.  At least this one does not require putting material back into a oversize hole.   ;D

Measure twice, cut once.  And check everything on paper before cutting, too.

After looking at the drawings, it appears that there will be only a bit of loss in elevating adjustment which should not cause a problem.

In has book Building 18th Century Naval Artllery Damian Siekonic says that style of wheel is the type used on Garrison guns.  Standard wooden wheels were used on ship board guns

I still have all the .dwg files for these drawings so if you would prefer to have the "real" drawings instead of the gifs I have posted for the forum, send me a PM with your email address and I will forward them.

Michael,
Is the bore .500" or 33/64"?  (Determines ball size.)

That should be fine for a .500" ball.
