7-08 + 300 yrds = Deer
« on: November 09, 2009, 08:14:57 PM »
My 16 yr old son harvested his 2nd Deer Saturday morning.
Hunting with grandpa on the edge of a Minnesota winter wheat field, now he's never shot that far before!~ They lasered and it comes back reading 300. He say's he put the cross hairs on the back, 1st round hits the shoulder hard, knock's the deer over,
he re-loads (extractor!) as the deer get's up and moves slow towards the woods.
Then the darn kid tries for a head shot, well that one misses the intented target but hit's the neck just right for that artery, that's all it took. Someone else said "a bloodtrail a blindman could follow" well that's what they had.

Just a fork horn, but we had backstraps for lunch today.  :)  Factory ammo, Win. 140grn Ballistic SilverTip, stats say it should have dropped 8" @300, and I guess it did! I'm gonna hafta get him on a longer range for practice, you can read all ya can, but it's not quite the same as seeing it on paper  ;)

Sure do like that 7-08, but i'm gonna have a hard time getting it back from the boy. er, um, ::), Young Man.

p.s. I got that barrel from a member here, followed the faq's for mounting, along with a few extra tips, so the success is as much a part of the members here, either shared or just info read as anything, Thanks ALL !! ;D

Good job there with the 7mm-08, and yes that was me that said, "Making a bloodtrail a blind man can follow" that is an awesome report.  Congrats to your grandson and ah me thinks you'll have to buy yourself a new 7mm-08 now.

Hello from Georgia,

Man, it is so nice to see young folks hunting deer, and making a good shot when it is time to do so. As far as getting the gun back, I say the young fellow has PROVEN that it is something that he is proficcient with, and you should sign the title over to him. This does two things. First and foremost, it allows a young hunter to begin a hunting career with a gun of their own which can be a huge confidence booster. Second, it allows you to justify acquiring a new rifle. Keep up the good work, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for encouraging our next generation of deer hunters !

Give him the gun, I couldn't make a shot like that :)

Great Job!  Man that 7mm-08 is sure getting popular....Performance per pound of recoil seems to be the ticket that everyone likes about them....

 :o

If I got the gun for every good shot I made  :D

300 yards is a very respectable shot, especially using holdover instead of dialing!  7mm-08 is an excellent cartridge, outperforms the 308 in my mind.

Thank you for posting that story, and congratulations to the young man on a fantastic shot!

And thank you for sending me that PM and the link to the story.

I never shot it at 300 yards but I knew it was a good shooter when I had it!

I shot a big ten point at 175 yards and it went down on the spot and never even kicked.  I remember reloading and watching him through my scope ready just in case he jumped up, but I didn't need to, as he was down for good.

Also made quick work of a couple of 200+ feral hogs.

All the barrels I've sold were shooters, and I love to hear the results when someone tells me how they liked the barrel, and it makes me feel good that someone is getting the same pleasure as I did from using it.

It was tough having to sell it, but I had too many barrels and one had to go, and this story just makes my day knowing it was put to good use!

Gotta love them Handi's!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
