New .500 S&W Mag Leverguns Now Available
« on: December 03, 2009, 12:26:58 PM »
I was glancing through my newly-arrived Jan 2010 copy ( No.248) of RIFLE Magazine, and after reading Brian Pearce's fine article about levergun hunting I spotted a pictoral ad for a new levergun !

The pic was a little dark, but the new levergun appeared to be a blued/walnut Winchester Model 92/clone, with a pistol grip/curved lever and a top-mounted peep that looked suspiciously like a Williams WGRS.

The gun is the "Model 89", and is said to be available in either rifle or carbine form - chambered to the powerful .500 S&W Magnum !

The offering/ad is from an outfit called "Big Horn Armory" of Cody, Wy - but when I tried their advertized website, all I could find besides a trophy pic of an Elk was a "site under construction" notice.

A 500 S&W Mag in a trapper configuration with a 16 to 18 inch barrel would be a mighty sweet rig though.  If the price was right, I'd be on the list to get one.

Well this is the second posting of this Model 89!  I see they've shot it at least once!  I have a Puma 454 and it's more then I'll ever need in the field -no need for a 500 Mag! ::)

Why hasn't anyone made a 460S&W in a lever gun? Maybe it wouldn't feed .45LC right? I dunno, but it seems like a 460 on a '95 action would sell.

500 S&W sounds like a shoulder buster to me.

That was a mouth full Bro Nelson! ive shot the five hunrd in the handgun configuration and it was not comfortable! I think I'd rather have a 45-70 if I was gonna have a "round" that big in a lever gun.

I bet this gun will start out close to $2,000. :(  I understand their need to be expensive being a custom action and all, it will be outta my league but I can still dream.  I guess if I need more power than my 45colt trapper I'll go to the 45-70.  Dave

The fact that they are not listing the price should tell you where it is going to start  ;)
Beautful looking gun.  While I may not "need" one, I sure WANT one.

:o Well it was a nice thought for a while! only way I could consider that rifle for that amount is if it comes with a 1400 hundred dollar bear hunt! Still a nice rifle just something that would make me define need and want again.  ::)

Nice lookin' gun.  Just not a fan of the top eject.  Would have liked to have seen a side eject on this gun.  WW Guns is supposedly prototyping a side eject .500 levergun.  I emailed them and that is what they told me.

well that was a quick high exciment and let down at once. first time heard about this and was excited til the price part came out. I second what TeamNelson said about the 460 would rather have that and even more if it would handle the smaller rounds. Im holding out for the 460 hand gun for that very reason.

I'm waiting for Ruger to come out with a super sized super redhawk in 500 S&W.  I recently wrote to them about it and i got a return answer that my letter was forwarded to there sales dept for further thought.

I wish they offered the lever action rifles in the old larger calibers like the 45/120 and 50/120 in a modern smokeless powder round.  I'd rather see the old cannon rounds become available so we can shoot a piece of history(round) and go back in time.
