.223 Superlight Youth Model & my 6 yr old Son's 1st deer
« on: December 27, 2009, 03:00:35 PM »

I took my 6yr old deer hunting for the first time this weekend. On Sunday morning at around 0715, this big old doe(100+lbs)and 4 yearlings walked out. My son says "Dad, I can't shoot the momma, what about the little ones?" :'( After I assured him the yearlings would be fine, he took the shot, and she hit the ground, but was hit back and required a finisher.
(I'll take it for a 6 year old, 22 degrees, 1st deer, and 60 yards away.) ;D ;D

He used a NEF Superlight Youth Model . 223 Remington with Speer 62 grain Gold Dots. Full penetration and larger than expected exit wounds.

Tell your son we are proud of him!  I bet he is in the clouds.

Now, why is it only 6yr olds can kill deer with a 223?

we have three of the superlight youths a 22(sportster) the 223 and a 243.

The 223 will do it, I have read the arguments, this is the second deer I have scene killed with it. With better placement I know the results would have been cleaner.

Thanks for the replies

Congrats to you and the boy! You have a hunter there. Tell him there was a bunch of us "adults"who came home empty handed :'( I wont go into the .223 debate, you did well.

No Kidding. Next time someone tells me a .223 isn't enough, I'm going to suggest they go tell that to BKS's 6-year-old. ;)

Maybe not about the 223 but what kinda feedback you getting on that avatar pardner? You shudda not made such a fuss about that picture and just let it be unposed and natural!  ;)

I Still like the shot and the fact that the Dad took the 6 year old on the hunt with a rifle and let him shoot, I was shooting at six but no where near a wild animal. It may have been my ability or lack there of, but Dad didn't let me shoot Game until I was about 12. I am impressed!

I took him to a preserve and let him shoot a feral hog in Feb of last year. The hog was deep in the brush and he kept telling me he could kill it, and I kept wanting him to let it come out a little farther into the open. I finally relented and he smoked it through the shoulders with this little rifle.
He can roll tennis balls at 40 yards with my Ruger Charger from the bench, hope he can make the old man some money when he gets older. ;D ;D

Awesome!! I have the .22 Hornet and .223 in this setup and they are spectacular! How do you like the .243 and how is its accuracy?

Typically the 243 Superlight will shoot a couple rounds right next to each other and the third out and inch or so, keep the barrel cool and it will shoot well, the light contour really heats up fast in 243, bedding the forend helps.

Sure bet that Back strap tasted good. Best of luck.  Marv.

BTW before hunting season there was a thread about Scout rifles and you showed a picture of a handi you had set up in a scout configuration. Did you get to try it out & if so how'd it work?

Haven't shot it as a 357Max yet, but it worked fine as a 357Mag, just didn't like the Hornady LE ammo I shot in it!!  ;) There's a link or two  in the FAQs on scout mount scopes, the easiest to do is with a Weaver #92 Contender mount, it mounts right up on two-hole H&R barrels, some older H&R1871 barrels only had one hole tho, you can have more hole made tho!!  ;D
