chop'n a 17m2 to 16"-----UPDATE---

since i got 2... i thank i'm gonna chop one.... around 16.5 "
crown'n is no prollum fer me. neither is the chop.

all my custom ruger m2's got 16"  gm,wp and tac-sol barrels. and they shoot bettern i can.....
h&r has the same twist rate as the gm and its the best.

i'm gonna try it... can y'all talk me out of it ? and why ?

the 17m2 shows to have the maximum efficency @ 14.33" but you can't have one that length
with the everyday walk'n round joe hunter like me.  
whatcha think ?

Do it. I cut my Savage MKII HM2 to 16.5 to be legal. Best thing I ever did. People at the local gunclub laughed till I shot over the chrony. I only smile now.

and people jus say..." well, look how much money you got in it" 
 now let'um say that wif the lil h&r...
if it shoots a fraction less after the chop, than the stock 22". it'll still blow them away
i'm glad you know where i'm come'n from...

You an yer chopin and fixin jest can't leave well enough alone can ya? If I had the means to do it myself I would as my 20"versa pack 17hmr works very well cept fer the ugli ass plastic sights and that plastic chunk of bbl blender WHAT were they thinkin? keep us posted on the outcome.Kurt

m2 tac-sol barrel? I had asked them about that and got a big no.  Did I miss something?

5 or 6 years ago, i got the tac-sol barrel from a local gunsmith.
thats about all i can tell you about it....
cud have been re-sleaved, but it sure don't look like it.

I only asked them a year and a half, maybe two years, ago.  They could have long given up on them by then.

OK,
she's bout finished....
chopped her to 16.5", crowned... an wait'n for the wind to stop gusting @15-20mph
so i can check my crown job.

picked up a nice youth syn stock set from fredster22.

touch up blue will be done after testing.

she balances well now without the added 5lbs of barrel end 

throws up real nice and still, jus right for them tree-rats 

can't wait till the shoot'n... maybe this afternoon!!!!

Well? How did it shoot? Just got my HM2 back from my grandson, gave him my 17 HMR since I have 2 Savages in 17 HMR, wanted it because of cheaper ammo.............

here is a copy from a reply i did to a thread from this
forum on cut'n a hmr below....

in my notes i show about average 22 fps faster when inside 1" group @ 50yrds
than 2"

then average 17 fps faster with 3/8" group @ 50yrds

not much faster when making 5-shot one hole  @50yrds.

i was shooting from a strapped lead-sled in a test cell.

from the beginning to the end, i would polish the crown after each shot group
until i got what i wanted.


jus keep polishing the crown until you get what you want...

i set her up for 50yrds, not much difference at 75.

mostly my hunting shots will be 50 or less.

Sounds great buddy, congratulations to you. I have an extra Sportster frame and would really like to get another .17 Mach2 barrel to cut down. I really don't want to cut the ones I have, besides what would I do with the empty Sportster frame?....<><....
