Shotgun Barrel Crowning

I would like to know how you crown a shotgun barrel. I just purchased a barrel that has been cut. It has a like factory finished crown. I have one that has been cut with a saw and would like to get it to look like a factory finished barrel. What are some techques to do this and please include tools that you use or have seen used. Picture one one left nice, one on right needs work!

See the crowning info in the FAQs. I've used  ¼" drive stone chucked in a drill to recess the crown on a .62cal smoothbore flintlock barrel that I shortened with a heavy duty tubing cutter which made a perfectly square muzzle, then used a patch of elk hide with a piece of 600 wet/dry and oil on a spherical stone to put a final polish on the entire muzzle surface, it kinda rounded the cut edges off and turned out real nice.

Remove any burrs with a fine file or a fine-ish cone stone (by hand) on the muzzle and shoot it to see if it goes where pointed. If not, you can adjust point of impact by filing the muzzle. Think about how the pressure behind the load will 'release' as it comes out and what that does to the load. Once you are sure it hits where its pointed you can do like Tim says to pretty it up.

Got a set of grinding stones at the autoparts store. The clerk said they use them for porting car cylinder heads. .99 in the cheap ben. The barrel I cut at 19", so I have a inch to work with! I have a fine set too!

Just be sure to turn them by hand, NO power tools or you are likely to be sorry (they make mistakes really fast).

What's the best way to do it by hand? Drill a hole in a cut piece of broom handle the some sizes as grinding wheel shaft. Then do it like you lap a valve? Man, I was getting ready to chuck it in the drill and go to town! :o

That would work pretty well. What ever gives you, as the 'operator' the feel and control you need so you can apply the pressure evenly. Some might like a ball handle too.

Well I got to it this afternoon! I'm bored, with all the record snow and more is coming. The snow is to deep for the dogs to hunt in, it's to deep for me, it goes over the tops of my rubber hunting boots and I don't like snow in my boots. :D So I started grinding the shotgun barrel by hand with just my fingers and did a good job. Now I need to start with the file on the outside.

Nice, even looking chamfer. You can really smooth it up with some fine wet/dry sandpaper & some WD40 (or kerosene) bellied down in there with the stone to provide the shape.

Just wanted to update on the shotgun crown job! It's not like the cut barrel I purchased, but I think I have done okay! The barrel is going on my deer hunting sluggun!



The pocket knife is a worn out Case XX  Stockman Model 63032, with bone handle.
