125 hogs killed in one hour..........
« on: February 21, 2010, 08:23:18 AM »
Some have criticized me for gut shooting and leaving them lay, even this well planned elimination system is having problems getting folks to take the meat from their kills.  Fact is, when the supply exceeds the demand extreme practices are sometimes necessary.

Check the link out to the Abilene Reporter News and their article on the use of helicopters to help control pigs.  300 in three days, 125 in one hour, that should say something about the numbers we are dealing with.

rockbilly, when I was hauling milk out of West Texas I have seen the hogs, and the helicopters. Folks that criticized you have not a clue as to what their talking about. Don't let it bother you. ;)

i sympathize totally. we dont have hogs here but i know the damage they can do.can yu snare them? either foot snares or maybe try to catch them by the hips. ive snared groundhogs, that aint easy. im wondering if a dozen or so hog snares might pay off if checked pretty often.

The guy that can snare a hog, and keep him snared is a good trapper. I'd like to see how that works.

They trap them here in Louisiana a lot. Once! They are smart. Almost impossible to trap one twice.

One idiot I know hunts his father-in-laws place near Stamford, TX.   He rides on the back of a four wheeler as they run along side a hog and he jumps off on the hogs back with a knife and stabs it.  My son swears he actually witnessed him kill a pig in this manner.

I must admit I have done some crazy things in my life time, but I ain’t stupid!

Someone wrote "Roping a Deer", posted here, and it describes just about what I would expect, or worse, from a hog...

I got a friend that roped a coyote one time. He said the coyote and the horse both were pretty upset with the out come.
We both worked on the Hunt Ranch as cowhands back in the early early 70s, and had tried it repeatedly. He said that coyote took all the glamor out of being a cowboy that day. I told him rain freezin on a saddle 5 or 6 times a day, when the horse was in an open trailer, was what took all the glamor out. After he thought about it, he agreed. One day off a year. Come on Christmas. ;)

I roped a elk once, but thats a whole nuther story........ ;D  But I don't think a rope will stay on a hog.

We used to ride up beside the sow & sholts and ketch them  sholts by the hind leg and pull them up off the ground and cut them , then turn them lose.  :o The sow would really object and sometimes it would get real interesting if your horse objected as well.

I found a hog that had been snared and was dead just the other day. A big old boar that was caught by one leg. He had ran around in a four foot circle for as long as it took him to die. It wasn't pretty, he had a big hole dug in that circle the depth of his legs and finally died almost standing up! I wouldn't wish that on anything.

The guy I mentioned in the other pig thread went out to a chopper kill the other day and claimed 25 hogs that he was going to butcher and process and donate to hungry families.  http://www.p-o-r-k-i-e-s.org/

If you know of any that need to be dealt with he will come get em! or at least meet you to get em.
