Topper158 .410
« on: March 12, 2010, 08:07:46 PM »
I picked up a topper158 .410 on the cheap.
I'm looking to turn it into a project and was wondering what my options are?
The barrel is 36" and marked 410 Gauge-P (missing the bead) Not very Handi!
The frame is marked Harrinton & Richardson, Inc.
AE US Pat 2876576
I'm going out on a limb and say the AE is the year prefix 1968.
It does have a plastic trigger guard and the hammer has been bobbed.
I'm assuming that the only centerfire that will work on this freame would be a 22 Hornet?
Thanks
-gary

does it have a serial number? If not that AE most likely does not indicate the year of manufacture.....<><....:)

AE US Pat 2876576 is all that is on it.
I ment to type 26" barrel, but it is a 28" after a measure and not eyeing it. -g

I think they made all the 158's on the same frame. They made them in 30-30 as well as shotgun gauges so it seem that a 30-30 barrel should be safe, as well as a .357 Mag and a .44 Mag. You would have to make up your own mind in that, as well as buy and fit the other barrels to that frame. The company will not do anything to a gun that old..All the best of luck....<><....:)

I was getting ready to offer you way too much money for that 36" barrel.  I have a 158 tracker 1/30-30 combo
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Sorry guys your slow. I had a PM from MSP that morning, hours later inquiring about the barrel. We have some true Handiholics around here!
I really would like to make a 30/30 or other shooter out of it if I can find what I need to do so.
The first thing that needs to be done is a hammer replacment and the right side rear frame has minor damage. It would appear that someone tried to force a screwdriver between the frame and barrel.
Does the lug look like it was rewelded again or just factory.
Sorry for so many questions as this is my first used older Handi.
My two others were bought new 308 and 357.

The only difference I've found in my 158 rifles and shotguns is that the rifles have a smaller diameter firing pin.. :-\ Nice catch ye made there on that profiled receiver.. ;)

Try your .357 barrel in the frame and see if it fits or comes close to fitting. If it does fit use the forearm that came with the .357 barrel and shoot it. If it does not fit, but is close and can be fitted, start looking for a barrel for that frame in 30-30, .22 Hornet, .357 Mag, or .44 Mag...It looks good....<><....:)

will a hammer spur fit on the hammer so it can be safely tightened?

unfortunately, you will only find .410, 20 ga, 30-30, and 22 jet to match that profiled design. however the other barrels will fit the will just stick up higher.
