45-90 project begins
« on: March 16, 2010, 08:26:41 AM »
I started this, ordered the brass.  Got skin in the game, so there is no backing out now.

I'm going to ream my buffalo classic barrel.  Planning on using 4d reamer ($30 plus shipping and return).  I used them before, so unless there is another great deal out there I will use them again.

Good luck I have started two projects in the last 5 days so I know you are excited. Good Luck!!!! What loading setup are you going to use? Are you going to use on the BC frame and stocks or are you going with different stocks? Sights?

Man you know the drill, DETAILS!!!!!

Several folks here have discussed the .45/90 and a few actually shoot it.  Accurate Arms publishes data and so does ReloadersNest.com.

Im going to primarily use these cartridges for black powder substitute loading (777).  Beyond that, I dont know if I keep shooting smokeless and 45-70 cases or smokeless and the longer case.  I am not changing sights or stock, it is going to be a 45-90 BC.

first little speed bump, ordered brass from Buffalo Arms, got an email later that it was on backorder, called and not in till end of April.  So I canceled and ordered from Track of the Wolf.  They say its in stock.  Back up and running again.

Track of the Wolf has them for about a buck a piece.

Actually well over $1 a piece with shipping, Grafs are .94 cents each with shipping, TOTW wants almost twice the cost for shipping for 50 of em for me, it's pretty hard to be their $4.50 flat rate shipping regardless of the weight or order total.  ;)

Ive noticed a number of vendors are 'padding' their price structure with exorbitant shipping and handling fees. As one who used to do some work in shipping and receiving I find it hard to swallow. When I get the 'take it or leave it' attitude Im inclined to leave it, and tell them why. I would rather shop where somebody actually acts like they want my business, then thank them for being reasonable.

What velocity are you hoping for with the 45-90 over the 45-70?

I only wanted 20.

I only wanted 50 so TOTW and Buffalo were better options for me.

Geography may actually be figuring in correctly with them.  Buffalo (west coast) was 11 shipping, and TOTW (Minn) was only 7 shipping to me here in MO, so I should have bought from TOTW in the first place.

Expected performance? Quite the muddy water there.  This is what I asked Hodgdon and Alliant

"Is it wishful thinking to expect the following

300gr  @ 2450 fps
350gr  @ 2250 fps
405gr  @ 2100 fps"

I am going by some general energy numbers, I easily achieve 3000 ft-lb muz energy with the 45-70, and know I am not at the top levels for the cartridge here.  I think I should be in the ~3500 ft-lb range and similar pressures with the 2.4" cartidge, and should be able to get upwards of 4000 ft-lb if I pushed it.  Maybe I am not using the best powder (Rel-7) now for max velocity, but I think it should work for what I want to do.  With 777, I push a 405gr to 1330 fps.  I hope to be able to get that up to 1500 fps in the bigger case.

Not that I plan on doing it (I almost bought the 2.6" brass) but should I decide I want more later, I guess i could ream it out deeper.

2450fps is easy to do in the 32" 45-70 BC with the 300gr Nosler and H4198, that's what 56.2gr does in mine anyway, that's one of Mac's  loads, it does 2425fps in one of my 22" barrels.

In the 45-90, QL predicts RL10x at 101% load density at 50kpsi will push the same bullet just over 2700fps in the 32" barrel, and almost 100fps slower in my 26" barrel. I'll be working with the discontinued 350gr Barnes Original with RL12 for 2400fps, also in the 26" barrel.

Depends on the shank length of the reamer. Some are shorter than others. The .45 throater from 4-d is a good example.

Did ya throat it bill?  Tyler said 405's were bumping the rifling in his 45-120, which is why I sent him the extension I made.  I throated my 45-70 and 45-120.

Sure would like a 45-90 and a 45-100...  :-\

No, I just reamed it with the finish chamber reamer as is.  I figure I just got .3" extra seating depth compared to the 45-70, so I doubt I will have a problem with that.  I will check max seating depth and see how my cast 405s line up.  I got this in the mail and bored it out that night but have not had an opportunity to get back to it since.  I am going to fill up the cases with 777 and let em rip sometime soon.

Some of "soon" has happened.

I loaded some rounds.  I was able to get 55 gr (weight) of 777 in the 45-90 case compared to 45 gr in a 45-70.  Maybe the taller case allowed more natural compression in addition to the extra volume.  With water I measured 11% increase in volume and got 22% more powder in there.

That 45-70 load pushed a 405 bullet to 1390 fps.  I am anxious to see how much faster the bigger case does.

Bill, welcome to the Brass Torpedo club! You'll want to start calling it the 2.4 instead of the .45-90 so the BPCR shooters will know what you're talking about. ;D
