Barrel band sling swivel?
« on: June 03, 2010, 06:32:04 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a barrel band sling swivel that will fit a .45 colt classic carbine that does not require soldering? I don't want to drill the forend. If one has to be soldered to the barrel can it be done without ruining the bluing on the barrel.

Use a regular solder-type band and stick it on with J-B Weld; wipe off the excess. It'll stay there forever.

IIRC Uncle Mikes makes them that are 2 pieces and are held on by a screw. I have a couple on lever guns and they have held up great for many years and many miles through the thick Maine woods.  have been meaning to get a couple for my Handi's. Just check the diameter of the barrel where you want to attach the sling stud and order the appropriate unit. You may have to get one for a .410 or 20 gauge shotgun but they are all the same except for the diameter. I want to get a couple for my shotguns as well, especially a 12 gauge I have....<><....:)

I have one of the Uncle Mike's clamp on swivels on my 20ga TDC turkey gun, I had to modify it to fit the contour of the barrel, but once I changed to a longer screw and made the modifications, it works fine, not as purdy as the solid type, but functional.  ;)

I have the U-Mikes 2pc and it fits up on a couple of my barrels pretty well. They come in some different sizes and you cant fault the 'easy to mount part' and a little more of a classic look up there rather than in the wood. The price is way better than machine time.

Yes, I think the look pretty good and they work great. I have one on my old Marllin 336 in .35 Remington and on my sons Marlin 336 in 30-30. They look nice, work great, have been on over 20 years each and have never let us down.....<><....:)

Gcrank1 I used to be a machinist and would enjoy making one, but don't have the machinery required. ;)

Maybe go down and talk to the 'local' voc-tech school shop instructor, he might be a good guy to get to know. Or even sign up for the class (those here are cheap). Even though you wouldnt need the 'class' it buys you cheap machine use. With a list of projects and your own prints you could do a lot for little outlay.

I ordered one from Ruger for a stainless No.1 which I'm converting from a Standard to a Sporter style.  Total cost was a little over $20 but you could probably find a blued one for cheaper from Brownells etc.  Looks cleaner than the 2-piece clamp on versions and appears to be tapered to match the barrel.

That looks like a dandy option! Can you give us an I.D. on both sides and/or what dia. barrel it needs to fit decent. I think I would use the H.D. Locktite for that.

Looks like .751" on one side and .754" on the other.  This is going on a .308 with the regular tapered barrel.
