New peep sight for Handi rifles *new pics p.2*
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:14:04 PM »
Hey all,

I just want to show off the rear sight I'm making for the Handi's. I have been a member here for a while, and we just signed up as a Sponsor here on Graybeards.

My company is a licensed 07 firearms manufacturer, and we are best know for our AK and Retro AR-15 type receivers.

But I'm obviously a big fan of single shot rifles also.  ;)

I didn't like any of the other rear sights on the market, so I figured we'd make our own.

The parts are not black oxided yet, but I wanted to show some pics anyways.

They are all steel, US made, and built like a Mack truck. The initial production will be a ghost ring only, and it will require a taller front blade.

I have not figured out the required height yet, nor have I calculated the true MOA on the range of adjustments yet.

The sight is click adjustable for windage, and the aperture is adjustable for height by loosening a set screw and screwing it up or down.

I will post those details as I have them. Price will be $54 +$5 for shipping.

ETA:  In stock and ready to ship.

And as a big plus, because the base is steel it can be soldered on to shotgun barrels without the need to drill and tap. This may also come in handy for certain rifle barrels (like mine) were the scope base holes are canted to one side and don't line up with the factory irons.

Very cool, I am guessing that your company is Nodak Spud, if so these are sure to be a quality product.

You could also thread that ghost ring to accept standard eyepieces for tang sights, etc.

I would like to get ahold of a couple of those.....

Sign me up for one. If you figure out the proper front dovetail sight it would be nice to add and sell as a kit

Big plus if you can get all the works in the base and have it the right height for the 38-55 and 45-70s with the Lyman 17A. I think the thread for many of the eyepieces is 7/32 X 40, but the distance to the sight base rear, to have the eyepiece clear may be an issue.
All in all I like what you are doing and after you work the proto out I could probably talk myself into one too.

Very nice!  I would like to see the front taper some, rather than the abrupt straight up and down.  Still I am very interested.  Keep us posted!

I appreciate all the positive comments.  ;D

The biggest problem with trying to make a front site for the Handi is the fact that many of the barrels are different diameters at the muzzle. My .357 is one, the .44mag is another, and my Huntsmans is even bigger.

Also, a guy can come up with the blade height from centerline for a particular cartridges trajectory, but a .44mag will have different needs than a .223 Rem.

This is the production model, and it will be kept simple and affordable. I won't be making any changes for now. If it proves to be a good seller I will look at refining the design for the next production run.

As far as the "Buffalo Shooters" are concerned; I have long term plans to develop a replacement Ladder sight that can be installed in this base.

That would be something I would be interested in.

Looks like some thought was put into what you are making.
Should be a good seller when you have a finished product.
It would look really cool if it could be made out of brass.
Not to sure how it would last as far as the working parts are concerned.
I am sure I will be on the got to have one list as soon as they are available.

I think you will need a very tall front sight, likely taller than any in production for the H&R.  Could be even taller than this one.  Larry

I know its more than most will spend, but NECG sights makes a banded front sight for most barrel diameters, and looks very nice also.

NECG stuff is pricey, but nicely made.

I have one similar to this on my Huntsman, and the adjustable elevation feature was very helpful.

We have the capability to whip up a front sight, but making every barrel diameter would be a pain.

Make an extra tall front sight and people can file it down to fit.

You really need to research the available front sights for different barrel diameters so you can tell customers where to buy and which one to buy.  Relying on someone else’s product to make yours useful can be kind of tough.  You need to be able to say "buy My rear sight along with Mr. Smiths front sight model number 99364B and you will have a complete sight set for a .243 Ultralight Handi Rifle".  Larry

It would be very easy for the customer to wrap the barrel in 400 sandpaper and fit the front sight to the barrel dia.   I love your rear sight, I just can't live with a 1" tall front sight.

I think what he is talking about is that the diameter of the muzzel determines how high the sight blade needs to be, so a superlight barrel would need a taller sight than a rifled 20 gauge slug barrel would.  Probably the front sight from one of the old versapacks with the offset barrel would work out well on most of the H&R barrels.  Larry

I've been coveting a set of Ashley Emerson's sights for my Marlin 1895SS.  Emerson solves the taller front sight problem by setting it on a taller base.  I think it looks very proportional.

Thanks for sharing this concept receiver sight with the forum.  I think it looks terrific!  Some of us old fogies really need receiver sights if we're gonna use irons.  Keep us in the loop!

The rear sight looks very nice, and from my other "addiction" (AR's) I know of Nodak Spud. They have a great reputation for thier products and thier service, guys. They are people you can trust. That said, I would like to see the front of the sight body angled or radiused (I would prefer and angle) and PLEASE thread the aperture for inserts right from the gitgo...it would be silly not to. Remembr guys, the old .22 Hornet front sights were the tallest made by H&R...<><....:)

Would a smaller wheel and slightly lower profile remedy the front sight problem, if there is even a problem, and would it even be possible at this juncture?

No, the tallest made by H&R were those on the offset 22 RF barrel on the versapack.  Larry

uh, the front sight on my 357 is too high.  It snags on all kinds of things.  I would be pretty annoyed with anything taller.

Just my 2 cents.

I think once finished this would work well and look good on a BC with the factory installed .584" front sight.  The hood on it keeps it from snagging.... I'd be happy to test that theory for you, by the way.
