New Guy and new shorty Handi
« on: September 08, 2010, 03:50:02 PM »
Hello, I'm Ron.  I'm 24 and from Mass.  I owned a .30-06 handi a few years back, but couldn't hit a barn with it so i sold it.  Jump forward a few years and in need of a truck/camping/brush gun, after doing alot of reading on here about NEF customer service and working with the rifle to make it shoot for you, i ended up with a .44 mag synthetic stocks.

I wanted a project, and a super reliable gun.  The only thing I've done to the rifle is cut the barrel to ~16.5" and put on a Barska 20mm Red dot.  I would eventually love to play with different fore arms and mount a longer, forward mounted picatinny rail.  Couldn't be happier with the rifle!  stock barrel length, it shot AWESOME groups at 75yds.  Haven't shot it yet since the barrel chop.

Barrel is refinished with cerma-coat

Ron, Welcome to GBO and a good looking 44 I have to add. If you want to make a different forward mounted Piccatinny rail options, then pick up a few of the less expensive Aluminum ones for the AR. Requires a little different mounting but the options of where and how are up to you 8)
I think the last I looked you can find a pair of 3 Aluminum Piccatinny rails for around $15 ...the  short Weaver mounts are useful as well if you know where you want to put your accessory that is..

Mighty good looking Handi you have there!  I've always liked the look of short barrels on Handis.

Ron,

Nice shorty 44!  I am very biased have 3 shorty H&Rs and want more. ;D  Hacksaw blades are cheap at WallyWorld, makes all my longer Handis very nervous. ::)  Welcome to GBO and the world of Handiholics.

Thanks guys. Its a blast to shoot! Took it to the range the other day, and I couldn't see any difference of accuracy.  Still about 2" at 50 and 75 yds without a rest and my cheap red dot.  couldn't be happier with it!

Picked up another NEF shotgun today.. for $70.  bore is in great condition and its really tight.... just needs cosmetic work!

Ron, glad to say it.....Ya done been bit.  I can't live long enough to catch up with Tim's number of Handis, but YOU could do it :o ::) :o  You guys know there's lots of advantages to living up here in the North Woods, but being close to candy stores and Pawn Shops is not among them. :'(

One thing that seldom gets mentioned is that handis not having a bolt or other things sticking out of their sides makes them especially nice truck guns. Don't know if they still make them or not but there used to be such things called pick pockets. Basically just a heavy piece of fabric folded and sewed into an open ended tube big enough for your rifle to fit in, the wife has made the last few I have used. It is screwed to the back of the pickup cab just below the back window so that the seat covers it. The gun is protected, doesn't bounce around with the rest of the stuff behind the seat, and if you stick the rifle in far enough that the end of the tube kind of naturally closes, I think there is a good chance a thief could look behind your seat and never see your gun.

Handis, and especially handy handis like yours are the perfect truck gun in my estimation, especially when mated to a pickpocket. The rifle slips in and out without a hitch, and if one should ever get stolen, it ain't like loosing a $1500 bolt gun, or like you've turned an AR 15 over to a criminal.

I cut my 44 magnum barrel just slightly longer than you cut yours, around 17.5 inches. I really like it and it shoots everything that goes faster than 1300 fps into very tight groups. This gun just might get a hog or a doe this year. I also put a Boyds thumbhole on it and scoped it with a 1 1/2 x 4 power Bushnell Banner.  Short is nice in a vehicle.

Well, this thread is rather annoying to me.  I'm at work (I'm completely caught up, honest  ;D) and was just going to scan through this forum quickly then get back to business.  But no, RonRon2112 had to start this thread, and further salted the wound with pics.  As if that wasn't bad enough, Tony 212 chimes in with his shotgun.   ;)

I really like both of these guns, a lot.  I have just purchased a Handi 223 with a bull barrel and thought I might be content at least through the rest of the year, but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks guys for these ideas, it gives me something to think about.

Here is a 45-70 that I had to doctor up. The barrel was cut when I got it but I had to even it up and do the crown. I then tapped the barrel and added the front sight.

CW,

Those are 3 really fine short Handis!  I think you have pointed me in a new direction, a short shotgun.  I don't have any CFs right now that I really want to chop.  Just what I needed, an excess to visit the Candy Store and the local pawn shop. ;D

My 20ga. pardner met the hacksaw the other day... it's 20" long now and wearing a set of fiber optic sights off a Rossi. should make a good brush buster for the whitetails. ;D  It looks nice sittin' next to my 18" 44mag too. Yeah shorty's are cool. ;)

Great lookin guns, but now a stupid question. I've got a 45-70 that would look real nice shorter, does it have to be crowned?

The short answer is yes. It trues the barrel square. A square barrel is needed for accuracy. Most gunsmiths will do this for you for pretty cheap.
