Handi in 35 Remington (Update on distributor)
« on: September 18, 2010, 08:54:37 AM »
I was just in my local FFL and they have a handi in 35 rem. Is this a special run. I was gonna buy a whelen but then I saw the 35........
Forgot to mention it has MO Break-up stocks. Not real excited about that.

H&R was going to make them 2yrs ago, it was canceled due to lack of distributor pre-orders, are you sure it's a factory rifle and not a rechambered 357 Mag or possibly a 35 Whelen? One distributor lists a 35 Rem/444 Marlin combo, but it never has been in stock yet.

Brand new rifle. I wonder if it made it to MS first b/c of our primative weapon laws

Dunno, the 35 Whelen filled that need, H&R makes it in three models, wood, synthetic and Handi-Grip, but any Distributor can special order firearms in common bores if they order 250 or more, at least 500 in other bores, IE 6.5mm.

It wouldn't surprise me if the 35's were out. H&R lied and said they would never make the Whelen's again then 200 of them appeared in Brandon Ms.

I had been trying to decide between a 357 and a whelen. Only reason I was leaning to the whelen was for the sb2 frame. The 35 might be just what I was looking for. Besides If I don't like it I bet someone would trade me for the barrel I want.

I think that the .35 Rem is way more popular than the .357 Max or the .35 Whelen. I can walk into 80% of the gun stores within 100 miles of me and find a used .35 for sale. Perfect for the hunter shooting factory loads.

I imagine the .35 Rem comes on an SB2 frame but if you are buying it to trade up to a whelen barrel later save yourself a headache and make sure the FRAME is SB2 not just the barrel stamp. Just my thoughts.
I think the .35 Rem would be a great gun, but then I get kind of excited about any that say Handi, topper, any of that H&R lingo on 'em.

Brand new rifle. I wonder if it made it to MS first b/c of our primative weapon laws

It wouldn't be legal in Louisiana because of our "38 caliber or larger" stipulation.  The way the law reads a barrel stamped "38 Special" would be legal while one stamped "357 Magnum" wouldn't.

Bought the 35 rem today. Factory brand new. SB2 frame. The camo stocks arent that bad, they're the new Mossy Oak. They had two more I've sent the info to a couple that were interested and will post on the open forum tomorrow.

I'd rather have the .35 Remington than a .35 Whelen.

My 35 rem marlin is the gun I always grab when I can't make up my mind.  With the new Hornady leverevolution ammo, it can reach out to most of the ranges that I am likely to run into.  Do have a Whelen - You can always load it down, but that 35 Rem will do anything you ask of it short of brown bear defense.

I'd pick a .35 Rem over a .357 or .357 Max. by a WIDE margin. Had one years ago in the Marlin & let it slip away, been sorry several times.
What is the big bugaboo over the FTFs with the Whelen in Hadi's? Ive never heard of it in a bolt gun or pump?

I had a ruger bolt gun in 35 whelen. It had FTF issues with factory ammo. I got rid of it. ;)

FrankV, FWIW, Ive read of too many FTF to have confidence in that chambering. If you have one that works for you, dont get rid of it it you think you might want another! Of course, they are all 'a cat in a bag' anyway, but I think I would much rather have the .35Rem.

I don't have a .35 Whelen, but I've read writeups now & then about it usually saying it's a great ctg & doesn't beat you up like the mags. But I've never read of FTFs till I got on this board. Are they really that common? I've looked at the specs. in the manuals & the shoulder should be large enough to headspace on reliably?
Guess I've just never read the things about it that talked about FTFs?

I built my own Whelen starting with an old Savage 110 30-06 action.  Never had any kind of FTF either with factory or handloads.  Super accurate with my 225 grain handloads.  You can always get a lemon in just about any brand of rifle.

I'm betting a southeast distributor ordered a bunch of em, a minimum of 250 is required, so someone else has to have some too, at least eventually, although Ilion may not have made the entire run yet. What distributor does Jerry's Pawn order from?

Thanks,

Tim

Not me, I already have one.  ;) I just wanted to know if they're a new standard offering, or a special order by one distributor.
