Got lucky with the new 44 mag!!!
« on: November 20, 2010, 11:45:08 AM »
As you know I just sold my 44 mag handi barrel and was without one... NOT ANY MORE!!  I traded my 22-250 Stevens for a brand new 44 mag CVA Scout.  I know it ain't a handi but I'm a handiholic so here's where I post. ;)
Anyway... I picked it up yesterday morning and put my 3-9x40 Redfield on it. I sighted it with 240gr. winchester ammo and let's just say it shoots "considerably" better than my old 44 mag handi. 5 shots through 1 hole is good ain't it?? :D
I had originally planned to take my new 357 handi this morning but took the new 44 instead. I got set up at one of my "honey hole" spots that's known to produce first morning bucks. About 2 hours after daylight I had a yearling doe come through and I let her walk hoping a buck would follow. At 10:15 a buck came sniffing through right on the track of the doe. I could see that his horns were banged up but he is a pretty good sized buck so I decided to shoot. As he came through a small clearing about 50 feet from me I settled the crosshairs right behind his shoulder and squeezed off the shot. He buckled at the shot and tried to run but he only made it about 20 feet and hit the ground. The shot hit perfectly behind the shoulder and left about a 1" hole coming out. The buck is a 6pt. with almost evey tine broken... he's definitely been scrapping with someone!! The performance of the 240gr. bullet was awesome... the top of the heart and both lungs were destroyed. The buck dressed at 141 lbs. and is at the processor right now being turned into some tasty steaks and roasts. All in all it was a great day. New gun and a nice buck... perfect.

I have been looking at those .44 mag Scouts pretty hard.

Stop looking and get it. ;D  This thing is nice. It's almost 2# lighter than my 44mag handi was too. Fluted barrel, checkered stocks, one piece scope mount/ rings, light trigger, etc.   It really is a nice rifle. If you like handi's (who doesn't :D) you'll like one of these.
Something else too... the forearm setup is completely different from the handi's... the barrel is attached to the frame with a pin like a TC and the forearm has 2 screws that hold it to the barrel... it doesn't contact the frame like the forearm on the handi's. It can't have the forearm pressure problems like the handi's because it doesn't touch the frame. It's a different setup and it's pretty slick.
The trigger is pretty light too... I'd guess about 3-3.5# pull. and smooth.
When I stand it up next to a handi the dimensions are almost identical too... stock length, grip location, trigger guard, etc.
I hate to say it but it's like a handi with all the bugs worked out.

Don't get me wrong... I love all my handi's but this one is definitely a keeper too. It's worth taking a look at for sure.

I didn't take any pics of the deer before we took him to get processed. His horns are pretty banged up so they're not really much to look at anyway... it looks like he tangled with something.... AND LOST. :D
Right now he looks like venison neatly packaged in the freezer. ;D

I can take pics of the new rifle if you want... it's a beauty. ;) ;D

the pride is knowing that you took out a worthy animal, and if you spice him up right then forget pride altogher and get your grub on

I think I've ate 1/4 of my deer now.  He was so old and musky I put him in a pot on simmer for 6-9hrs each pot full (4) and spiced him up real good to get the tang out of him.  Now he's like oxymoronic lean-brisket.

Congrats on the buck!

As for the Scout, sorry, but I don't like the looks of the CVA at all... The forend looks pregnant to me, the trigger guard is round?? The butt stock looks emaciated, too sculpted for my taste. The forend mounting may be a improvement, Triggers are a non issue as I can make about any trigger what ever I want it and accuracy well that's "adjustable too. Speaking strictly form a looks stand point, for my $$ the handi wins.

I don't think it's last years model. I just got it new in the box. I went to the website too and didn't see it either, but they have 'em for sale at a few places on the web.  :-\

I agree somewhat on the looks... it's not what us handi guys are used to but I don't think it's bad lookin' either. I care more about function than form. I put 5 shots through the same hole while sighting it in and killed a buck with it already so it looks good to me. ;D

If you guys will watch the video on the scout,it lists the 44 mag,and the 444. Also,Spanky was that onehole target at 100 yds? Buds Gun Shop has them in stock for $279 shipped. I really considering one myself, and making another 445 Supermag.  Digger

Mine was priced at $279 too.
Yes the group was at 100yds. I shot it off my lead sled and was using factory winchester 240gr. ammo.
I kept the target... I've got it here somewhere. I'll take a pic of it and post it.
The only thing I've done to the rifle is mount my Redfield 3-9x40 on it and clean the factory oil off of the underlug and latch shelf.
I'm real happy with this rifle... CVA has done good. :)

Nice hunt and thanks for the review on the Scout.  I've been looking at those also.  I think the main selling point to me is the 1:20: twist 44 mag barrel.  Much better imho than the H&R 1:38 twist.

I got mine this eve. and the trigger is breaking clean at 44 to 46 oz.s. The chamber is a tight fit with .001 clearance over the full leangth sized brass. My handi 44 mag was .006 oversized at the chamber. I'll shoot it tomorrow.  Digger

What are you planning on putting on it for optics?
Now that you have it in your hands it's a pretty slick little rifle ain't it. ;D
Mine fits me perfectly and the one piece scope mount/ rings is just the right height for my Redfield.
I've been shooting 240gr. winchester ammo... what are you using in yours?
Good luck shooting and have fun with it.

Spanky,I put a 1.5X4 Busnell on it for right now.I'll start out with some 240 XTP's and then the hornady 265's and then maybe the 300 gr.XTP. I'm happy with it so far,but the barrel looks like bull barrel thats been fluted and I belive that it will weigh more than 5.3 pds.  Digger
