Hunter Safety Instructor Needs Your Assistance

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am a certified hunter safety instructor for the state of Washington.  Each year I train approximately 100 new hunters on a completely voluntary basis.  As part of our training program we teach the students that it is not safe to shoot modern shotshells in a damascus barrel gun.  Unfortunately most students have not seen a damacus barrel.  I would like to be able to show them one.  If any of you have an old damascus barrel that is no longer functional and you are not keeping for sentimental purposes and would be willing to share it with me to use in my classes I would be very grateful.  Even just a 6" section of barrel that show the damascus striations would be wonderful.  I would be happy to compensate you for the shipping cost and would be pleased to let all my students know that another hunter/shooter was kind enough to donate to a good cause.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at ejb@ecgmc.com.

The chances of a new hunter finding a damascuss shotgun is slim at best. You might suggest that they take their gun to a gunshop so a qualified person could look at it if they are unfamiliar with the age or condition of their shotgun. POWDERMAN.

I agree with your comment, however the material is required teaching by the state of Washington and is a specific question on the test which the students take.  Thus, I would like for them to understand how to recognize a damascus barrel.

How about some pictures of Damascus barrels? Not as good as the real thing but probably would help.

Just tell them that the damascus bbls will look like they have little circles going around them from one end to the other and probably no bluing. POWDERMAN.

Your best bet in showing Damascus barrels is via images and pics.  Guns with Damascus barrels command a premium wih collectors today due to the facts that they are no made any more, and that they were also used in creating signature firearms.  many of those guns have engraving, thereby raising any price.

Guys:

I appreciate your comments, but I don't want an entire gun.  I want a 6" section of an old beat up barrel that has no value.  I have pictures of damascus barrels and I can describe what one looks like.  What I am looking for is a concrete example so students can see the real deal.

good luck in your search, and be prepared to pay for any length of damascus steel.
