The 454 handi draws blood....
« on: December 04, 2010, 03:15:49 PM »
Evening everyone,
I spent most of the day in the woods today and had some fun! No deer, didn’t even see one! Although there is huge activity in the past couple days. We had some bad weather go thru so I haven’t been in the woods since Tuesday afternoon. I was supposed to go out after work Friday, but got stuck a bit late and couldn’t go. My buddy shot a nice doe leaving the woods, he saw about 10 deer in two and a half hours. So we planned today’s hunt. There are atleast six or eight trees around one of my stands. We must be experiencing a second rut.

About 08:30 I hear my pop shoot, I later find out he shot a coyote, but saw two. One shot from the 243 stopped him cold. 100Gr Hornady
RN in the front of the chest, exited the left ham with a dime sized exit. I also later find out my friend ,(with us.) also saw two coyotes cross the tote road as he worked his way to his stand earlier this AM.

Here is pops coyote:

About 09:00 I hear something behind me, I finally see it’s a coyote about 75 yards, walking directly toward me, down a deer run. Only problem is he is on my right . Now I’m a righty, so, I will need to either wait till he passes or shoot him off my left shoulder. He makes it about ten yards closer and looks as if he is going to take an abrupt right behind a big blow down. I need to shoot or let him go. Cant do that… ;) so I need to shoot him lefty. I get the rifle a Handi 454 thru the hole in the blind window and line up on the yote. He is facing me at a slight quartering angle. I put the post high on his left shoulder and squeeze. BOOM and bag I see stars!!! The scope cracks me in the bridge of the nose. I must have crawled up the stock a bit. I grabbed my nose and at first I don’t find any bleeding. I look up and the yote is doing circle flips and snarling. He makes it about fifteen feet before piling up. Now I can feel and see the blood running down my nose. I’m on four different blood thinners from my heart attack two years ago. So I tend to bleed freely. It took me almost an hour to get it to stop.  ::) I can feel a clicking and piece or tow moving inside. So I guess I broke a piece off.  :o
The 454 Casull bullet tore a dime sized entrance and a baseball sized exit!!! This was a 200 FTX bullet at about 2000 fps. I haven’t choreographed it so the velocity is a guess. Its 1650fps from a 7.5” barrel. Mine is 20”. Explosive expansion I would say as the coyote shouldn’t offer any real resistance in the spine is not hit and I didn’t hit the spine.

Saw NO deer all day!! Guess those coyotes pushed them into other areas.

My nose is pretty sore and my right eye is beginning to show a bruise.. LOL I guess I got stomped by my 454!!! I thought you guys would get a chuckle from my story.

CW,

I feel for your forehead, I am on a very high dose of the blood thinners and I think every scoped gun i own, except my 17HMR, has drawn my blood.  I am a rightly and I have shot 3 deer left handed and was bitten by my slug gun everytime.  Doesn't hurt as much when you get what you are aiming at.  Now that the yote population has been thinned a bit may your whitetails will come visit.

Good luck and be safe.

CW,  I know the "creep up the stock" thing.  Did it with a 12 gauge magnum slug once and had to go to the emergency room to get my head just above my nose stitched up.  Kind of hard to drive into town with blood running in your eyes.  I imagine more have done it than are willing to admit.  Get them yotes!

I did it too with the 45-70 with Petes 405 Remington load recipe..... I just wish I had a coyote to go along with my story instead of a piece of paper.  :D  It would make a much better ending.

Way to go CW, we'd like a pic of the shiner too if ya don't mind!!  ;D

Tim

Here ya go!!  I got it almost stopped bleeding here to snap a pic. Its a cell, self pic, so not so good:

The wife snapped one, as she laughed at me, when I got home:

Then this AM :

Bruising still not too bad, but its swollen!! I'm really surprise about the lack of bruising, as I usually bruise easy with all the meds I'm on. It doesn't hurt much this morning either. Just like a dull ache.  ::)

I'm packing up for a range trip today.. Got some heavy hitters too... 35 Whelen heavy loads, 45-70 hunting loads, bunch of 500 S&W to test, then my fearsome 454 and a couple puppies, my Maximums.  ;D I always bring a 22 as well for in-between fun.  ;) Range report with pics later. Hope the kickers don't aggravate it too much...

CW, sorry about the nose, but great story!  good job on thinning the yodel dog population down.  I need to do the same thing this winter, may help the deer population at my cabin.  Hey CW, when you shorten the 357, do you plan on doing it in steps to check the velocity loss for each inch?  Hint, hint. ;D. Good luck getting some meat later.  DP

Great story CW, and thanks for thinning the coyote population. I feel for you when I see the pictures of the "scope bite". I did it once with a 45-70 trying a scope with very little eye relief. That scope was removed from the 45-70 as soon as I stopped the bleeding and returned home from the range.
To your hunting crew, keep up the good work reducing those coyotes!!! I most likely will not hunt in Maine next year because of the lack of deer and the increase in coyotes. I would love to hunt just coyotes there but the state increased to hunting license fees (AGAIN) for non residents, and just to shoot coyotes on my own land in Maine I have to buy a non resident big game license. I will hunt somewhere else in New England next year, hopefully where I get to at least see a deer....<><....:(

LOL,
 Thanks guys!!

Yes we did some real good yesterday for the Deer, Turkey and rabbit populations on our property!!!

To date I have shot five yotes and pop two off this property. Been hunting it for about 6 years.

Last season I saw a big black yote a couple times, just never when I had a gun in my hands!!  ::) ::)

CW nice job on the yotes. If you are into old school metal at all the band Anthrax has an album named Stomp 454.

Man, there are a lot of coyotes around there! That's gotta affect the deer hunting. We're planning on trying to bust a few coyotes ourselves this winter. We've never hunted them before (trapped 'em when I was a kid).

I got me one of them scope-bite scars too. But I missed the doe I was shooting at.

Congrats on a good off-side shot.
