Had some Handi project time.
« on: January 02, 2011, 01:35:02 PM »
I had gotten some new power tools for Christmas and had some free time to day to do some work on my Survivor. For those that have one of these stocks on their gun you know the comb is really low. I had tried to raise by attaching foam in layers to get a usable height but I never did like how it looked.

I had seen lots of strap on pads and the Choate pads but felt I need some thing a bit higher. So I cut one my self ;D. I used my angle grinder to cut some scrap 1/8" steel that I had around to shape and the mounted it to the stock. I played with the height until I was comfortable. It really changes the whole feel of the gun making it much more comfortable.

Yes I know it is pink. Next project is to repaint.

One thing I noticed is I originally had bolts that went all the way threw the stock. When I tightened them up I was really squeezing the hollow stock so I switched to shorter bolts and the nuts are now inside the stock.

Neat concept!  Don't drool on that steel when it's zero outside, you'll lose a chunk of skin that way! :o  Really though, I would be concerned about it being very cold when hunting.

I hear ya on it being cold. After I get it painted it will get a layer or two of mole skin on it. If you have never tried putting mole skin on the comb of your rifle I recommend it makes it nice and comfy.

Here is how the gun mounts up. I also have a set of SlingStix on it as a poor mans bipod.

These pictures are also a good example of why some animals eat their young ;D

Looks like that gets you on line with the scope.
That is a Desperate Housewife color ;D

I like the green camo paint job. Is that digital camo (tape)?
Never seen that is stores.

What scope is that. I like the size ;)
What caliber?

Thanks!

Yes it is digital camo tape. I have forgotten the name of the stuff. I bought it on base awhile ago. It is the same stuff that they use in hospitals.
The scope is a cheap NCStar 4X nothing fancy but it has help up well. The gun is in .308.

bigvarmint what part of NE Indiana are you. I am up in Auburn.

awesome Idea,  how did you get the nuts into the stock? also what bout using a course threaded screw like a wood screw?

And on that wrap  you can get it at cheaper than dirt, and it only sticks to itself.

That's the stuff thanks for the link ;D

As to how I got the nuts on the inside. The stock is hollow so all I did was remove the but plate and reach in with a pair of needle nose pliers to get them threaded on the bolts. As far as wood screws I imagine they would work fine I just didn't think about them at the time. I am in the process of repainting the gun I will put up new pic's when I am done.

Decent MkI cheekpiece! Hit the local auto salvage yard and start looking at plastic car parts, even the pulled plastic gas tanks, for something with the curve(s) and thickness you want.  If you can beg or borrow a cordless 'sawzall' type tool you can cut a chunk out on the spot.

gcrank I will keep that in mind for next time. The steel I had on hand so used it out of convenience.

Here are some updated pics now that I had some time to get paint on it.

I had to get this on the gun some where. ;) ;D
