Muzzle loading percussion double BBL shotguns
« on: December 26, 2002, 02:29:07 PM »
MY ML shotgun is an old English made 10 ga. thats at least 120 years old probably closer to 140 and I've been shooting trap and pheasants with it off and on for the last 12 years, but the ancient Damascus twist barrels
do kind of scare me as who knows what lurks in those twist lap welds after all this time and I've heard Damascus failures are really nasty when they frag.
I recently posted a question about the possibility and cost of re-lining those bores and making it a 12 ga. on the Greybeards Gunsmithing forum and the guy who responded definately knew what he was talking about
he said it would cost considerably more to get those barrels lined than buy a new BP shotgun, I checked around and I could probably buy a couple of nice modern BP shotguns for what it would cost. Anyone here have any experience with the modern ML shotguns from Dixie or Navy arms etc,
as to the overall quality, I don't care about fancy engraving but I would like nice wood and quality locks, I also wonder if the chrome bores some of those Italian shotguns feature are a good thing or something to be avoided. fredj

:agree:

Fredj:

I own a Navy Arms side-by-side in 12Ga.  I've hunted dove, squirrel and rabbit with it.  Shot a bit of trap too....slow and civilized.  I am very pleased with the quality and it has yet to give me any problems.

BTW, I was cruising the net the other night and noticed that Navy Arms is running a sale (or clearing out) on their Upland Shotguns.  Take a look and see what you think.  http://www.navyarms.com/
