444 marlin on an SB1

Guys, I have been doing some research and I think it will work.  H&R will put a 44 Mag barrel on an SB1, the mag round generates upwards of 40K+ PSI according to Hodgdon.  The 444 also stays right at 40k+ PSI from there loading data.  If the handloader was to keep loads safe do you guy think it would be safe to use a 444 on a SB1?

You're mixing CUP and PSI, the 44mag has a SAAMI MAP of 36kpsi (old standard was 40kcup), the 444 has a SAAMI MAP of 42kpsi(old standard 44kcup) and a bigger case head, .471" vs .457", I wouldn't recommend the 444 on an SB1 at all if there's even a remote possibility of someone else ever loading it with factory ammo when you're not around, just leave it on an SB2 frame and know you're safe.  ;)

Quick, your right I did mix up psi and cup, but I found load data keeping the 444 under 40k either way.  There is NO chance of factory ammo going in, havent had factory centerfire ammo in the house in 9 years!  From what I have read here and elsewhere I think the SB1 is like a contender and a SB2 like the encore, fine for low pressure but not for high.  I would even think the SB1 could easily handle trapdoor 45-70 loads.  But thanks for your thoughts Tim.

Colonel,

I would be worried about what happens with the 444 barrel on an SB-1 frame when I am gone.   Someone gets that setup at an estate sale might just load some factory ammo or a hot reload and have a rude awakening.  I have a 357 Maxi on an SB1 frame and I have chosen not to restamp the barrel with the thought down the road that folks would only load it with 357 Mag ammo & not a hot 357 Max load.

BTW, good choice with the 444M it is my favorite handi caliber.

In good conscience you should keep in mind what might happen when you're gone and someone not in the know gets hold of paw-paw's gun.  In my years gunsmithing I have run into many cases of people wanting to shoot shotguns with short chambers, damascus barrels, etc.   Just waiting for someone to discover that a .444 will chamber in a .410 and tries to shoot one.  Goatwhiskers
