Forend Hanger Bar
« on: February 16, 2011, 02:23:14 PM »
I finished the Handi hanger bar today, it took quite a bit less time than the dovetail version I did on the Wizard barrel, I put this one on the 260 Rem Superlight barrel hoping it will benefit the most from more free floated barrel although it's not much, but I'll be able to compare the two mounting methods since I didn't remove the forend stud, there's a bit more space between barrel and forend with the mount in place, so the stud doesn't touch.

The barrel  is .745" straight at this point, so all I did was run a ¾" (.746") end mill down the side of a short length of ½" square 6061, that fits the contour of the barrel real good, then drilled it in two positions, used a center finder to locate the center of the barrel, then drilled and tapped one 8-40 hole in the barrel then anchored the mount with one screw and used the other hole position to locate the other hole in the barrel so they matched the holes in the mount.

Range trip when the weather improves.  ::)

Is the 260 Rem a custom barrel?   My wife's stepfather has only good things to say about the 260 rem.

Quick, looks simple and effective.  If it works, you can open shop.......IMO the biggest problem with single shots is that pesky forend.....

Tim,
I think you have out-done yourself again! Is there any room to glass bed it to the forend? Any need to? I am patiently awaiting the range report results.... :P

Thanks, Dinny

Thanks guys, this definitely was a good way to deal with cabin fever!!  ;D  I made this one for a synthetic forend, but it could be made a little different for a wood forend with no problem by using thinner material for the longer piece, .375" instead of .500" material, it could be bedded too.

The 260 Rem barrel is a rebored 243 barrel.

Tim, You do really nice work. I'll be looking for your range report as well. Seems one has to be handy to work on a handi.

What's the purpose of this hanger bar? Looks neat but not sure why it's needed?

To free float more of the barrel, it also eliminates any contact between the frame and forend, the forend is attached only to the barrel, it doesn't touch the frame at all.

Tim, when you open the action, won't the barrel be real wobbly without any contact?

Yup, but who cares if it shoots bug holes!!  8) Been shooting them that way for years, doesn't hurt a thing.  ;) Read number 5 of the Handi Basics 101 sticky.

So how much space is between the plastic forend spacer and the frame when the forend is attatched?

I think I would use a layer of VERY thin celophane tape at the forearm/frame contact and glass bed the forearm to tightly fit the hanger, with good back pressure to the tape while it sets.
Make sure you chamfer the edges of the hanger block if you do this so it can come apart without too much trouble later.
Even with no contact and a bit loose on opening the barrel wont fall off like they want to when you dont have a forearm on at all!

About .005", enough to pass paper thru.
