Sold My Bike

Buddy had a bad crash a few weeks back.  Decided I can't miss that much work at my age.

 I hate to see anyone get hurt on bikes. No matter who is at fault the Rider gets the most damage. Also hate hearing of a fellow rider giving it up. But I do understand and would probably do the same if it happened to someone I knew.

 Hope he comes out ok.

Good buddy of mine I work with rides a bike to work. a few years ago, hit an 8 point and almost lost his hand. About a year ago hit a doe and shattered his ankle. About 6 mo ago hit a doe and broke several ribs, a lot of road rash and hospital stay.
believe it or not there are a few more in there includling a dog just cant remember how they turned out.
when we go somewhere and see a dead deer by the road, we say, John has been here.
He says it is cheap on gas. The boys got a hard head.

I live in the country, I see the deer  quite frequently in the we hours of the morning. Knock on woods, my annoying loud pipes gets their attention and spooks them :) I do have a friend who has hit 3 deer with motorcycles. He has been lucky and nothing but road rash.

I ride to work, 'bout an hour each way so the gas savings has paid for two bikes now.  I live on a 12 acre plot that we call our "wanna be a farm".  Deer are seen daily and nightly as I work the afternoon shift and get home at midnight.  Louder than stock pipes do indeed seem to keep deer outta the way.  I am also a firm believer in lots of light and looking waayyy down the road and off both sides for about 30'.  My closest calls with deer have all been at dawn and dusk.  In full sun and full darkness your headlight (and driving lights) should give you enough warning.

Sorry to see anyone giving it up but it's good you know yourself that well. My friend started looking at the road under his bike and saw it as a belt sander. Kind of spooked him and he quit riding. Another had an accident at work and has neck problems, he probably could have still rode but he couldn't turn his head all the way and didn't want to be in or cause an accident so he gave it up too. I'm sure I'll have to stop one day, hopefully not for a while yet though.

Hope you decide to get back on in a few years! I lost a brother on one and left mine home most of the time while raising the kids, but now retired, Mom and I are on it alot.  We take a two week trip every year and travel the U.S. or Canada. What the heck, the kids would win sooner.

I wouldn't sell the Fiesta.  It's the best car I've ever owned.  The money from the Sportster went to pay the Master Card off.

Due to deer I try really hard to avoid riding at dawn/dusk and at night. If one is very alert and defensive you can avoid a lot of things but a deer will just jump out and get you. Someone once said that the easiest way to deer hunt is to sit on your bike with the headlight on and a deer will jump right out in front of you.

Riding at night isn't bad, in certain areas.  I work afternoon shift and get off at 11:00 pm.  I don't get home until midnight.  The only close calls I have ever had with deer are at dusk and dawn.  You just have to slow down, and look further off the sides of the road than you normally would.  Be extremely cautious going over hills and around curves when out in the country.

The famous quote "I don't know where it came from, it was just there and I couldn't miss it".   I bumped one with the Jeep. Saw it coming slowed down to nearly a stop ,it turned around and ran then turned back and bolted right back into the road. I hit her at about 2mph I saw her make contact and she barely made the Jeep move at all. Left a greasy spot is all. Would have knocked me loose from the bike though.

I've hit a few deer with several of My pick up trucks, mostly past 11 PM, though one was during mid afternoon, and that deer actually ran into my truck.
 As a biker, I've been riding since my mid teens, and I'm currently just about one year from the big 60, and I still own/ride a cruiser.
 Closest that I ever came to hitting a deer with a cycle was way back one day in October of 1971.
 I had a brand new 250cc OSSA Stiletto TT motorcycle, and was riding (like a bat from hades) down an old rail-bed (rails removed) on the cinders, during a sunny, mid-afternoon.
 My guess is that My speed was likely 50+ mph, and since this was strictly an off-road racing machine, I had no instrumentation or lighting equipment.
 Suddenly, a large doe darted from the brush, and ran directly across my path of travel. She was so close that I could actually smell her, and I probably missed colliding with her by less
 than a foot. Never did hit the brakes, because it happened all too quickly, and I'll settle for a handful of good fortune anytime.
 
 Can't say that I blame anyone for taking a hiatus from motorcycling.
 I did for a short time, but then returned to the riding fraternity, and I ONLY ride for pleasure these days, and never during any precipitation.

I gave up riding after a close call w/wife on the back, that was ten years ago. Wife is gone, having taken house and everything else. I think I'll get another bike sometime soon... I want another 83 GS1100E.


Never hit a deer, but I've thought about it... it's one of those things you can't really prepare for. Loud pipes might help, but you don't know. That's a grim thing about riding: minor things can become catastrophes.


Bikes don't save all that much gas, anyhow. My last to bikes were 1100cc rides (one a shaftie) and neither go much better mileage than my 4cyl wagon, esp. when ridden in an entertaining fashion. Add the cost of sprockets/chain tires (price tires, then realized how fast an 1100 can go through rear tires) and I can  make a pretty good case that the right kind of car is cheaper to own/operate than litre bike.

I hit a Coyote doing between 80 and 85 in New Mexico on my Suzuki 750.  Did not go down, but scared me enough to sell the bike.  The day I sole the bike to a young college student, he went for a ride up to Mescolaro.  On the way home later that afternoon, he hit a horse doing about 90.  Killed him and the horse.  I quite riding for 25 years. 
 
Started riding again five years ago.  Last year I almost hit a Black Bear just north of Lake Okeechobee down in Florida.  Shook me up a bit I can tell you.
